I think most still run lead acid batteries in their starter boxes, but some have gone to the lipo. Our LHS owner advises not to use lipos in this application becasue it's a on-off switch and is really hard on lipos - he claims it will shorten their life drastically. I personally have two 4200 NiMH stick packs wired in series and it works well for me. I can use the same charger for the cars and starter box and if needed, re-peak the batts during a long race day.

Sup my man, I have been using Lipo's in my starter box for years now, it is 14.8V, 2300maH cheap ebay unit and has been going strong for the best part of 3years. It cost 30bucks delivered. Gives better power than a lead acid and the box is light, great for traveling.

I run a gel cell in both my boxes and use a float style charger to maintain the cells. The float style charger made a big diff in how long the cell last. My oldest is 3yrs and still going strong.

Only prob with lipo is you have to take care not to overdischarge it, would def make for a lighter box to tote.
