ESC for 540 can confusion

I have been setting up my car to race in 540J can class the ESC that I am using is just a cheap HPI one.

With all the different ESC models and seeing as 540 engines are not as advanced (not all the bells and whistles) as some of the newer motors. Does the speed controller that I use make that much difference on the 540 J can motor. Will I not be as competitive if I don't get a $200-$500+ speed controller.

I was looking at the LRP TC but if its not going to make a difference on my motors performance then is it worth getting..

Any people that run 540 class do you get a performance advantage running a high end speed controller with a 540 Can motor.

Thanks

I assume that by 540 can motors you mean the non-rebuildable 'silver can' motors?I don't typically run those but I can vouch for performance improvement on 27t and 19t motors by upgrading from low-end speedos to G-11's or LRP QC2's for off-road. The way they handle current and offer more high-RPM power simply can't be ignored.
IMO if you have well-maintained motor and packs, you will definitely see a performance increase by trading up to a higher-end speed control that was custom-made for the specific type of racing you're doing. I'd be very surprised if you didn't notice a difference with the LRP TC over a $50 cheapie.

Thanks mate better upgrade the speed controller then.. I have been told in the past that for 540 can motors it should not make that much of a difference but I thought it just must..

Cheers

I've been racing for almost 2 decades now.. and I can tell you that going from a "sport" speed control to a "racers" speed control with brushed motors, you will have a noticeable difference! You get more power, smoother throttle and more brakes! Not to mention most have various profiles for tuning. You can buy top of the line used brushed ESCs on the trading forums and ebay for pennies on the original price. A Novak GTX sometimes go for as little as $30! They were $175 in there day!
