MRC RB970 10A 12VDC Power Supply - $25

How do you know what amp power supply that you need. Its obvious the power supply has to supply 12 volts. I am just curious about the amps.
|
Volts x Amps = Watts
So you need to find out the max wattage of your charger and/or what packs you'll be charging and go slightly above that. For example my MRC 989 is a 106w charger. 12v x 8.83a = 106w So a 12v 10amp power supply would be enough. It comes with a 15v 10amp power supply. Here are some examples of common lipo batteries and the max amperage my charger could charge them at. 2S 7.4v x 14.3a = 106w 3S 12.6v x 8.41a = 106w 4S 16.8v x 6.3a = 106w However my 989 has a max charge rate of 10amps. I hope this helps you out. |
If this is your charger then it is 90watts - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXMAJ0&P=ML
90w/12v=7.5amps These are some of the cheapest high amp power supplies I've found, and I get my batteries from them. You need to register and log in to see the lowest prices. Always get the EMS Express shipping and it will take about a week to get. $50 - http://hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store...idProduct=9205 $40 - http://hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store...idProduct=6879 $30 - http://hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store...idProduct=8592 I'm planning on grabbing the 25a one on my next order, so I can run more than one charger off it. |
If you are in a tight budget like me I would use a old CPU power supply which gives a great power I ran 2 of my ice charger a fan and a tire warmer at the same time. You just have to look it up online how to convert one. I got mine locally for 5 bucks from a local rc guy here but it's already made when I saw how it was converted it was pretty simple.

I agree - PC power supply unit.... thebasic ones are 300W , plenty enough
If you need a link , let me know , but google will help. Just remember 1) connect s many of the 12v and 0v together for best connections 2) i think its the orange wire which needs to be hooked up to black to power up As a bonus you can have a 5V supply too if needed Not best looking , but you can doll it up. |
For what you are charging, 10 amps is plenty. Even if your charger is capable of putting out say 300 watts, if you never charge anything that high you will not need a 300 watt supply. So unless you intend to charge 3 or 4s lipos at 10 amps or more, a 10 amp supply will be enough. The nice thing about higher output supplies is that you can run multiple chargers off of just one supply.
The tiny little supply I use for charging all my nitro related equipment is only 8 amps. |
+1 on the PC power supply.

Keep in mind that a 300w PC power supply is not going to put out 25amps at 12v, that wattage is for every circuit put together.
