Zippy Hard Case, low voltage on Hyperion
 

I have a brand new Zippy hard case 4000mah 2s Lipo that I put on my Hyperion 0606i and it just says low voltage. Should I just scrap it or is there something else to it?

i have herd that you can jump the packs by putting them on a nimh charger for a few moments untill you see the voltage increase to around 6v.... then put it back on the lipo charger... this is risky but it could save your pack ... like i said though i have not done it just herd it could be done

Check the voltage with a dvm - how low is the lipo reading? Why is it low - did you overdischarge it? Hyperion charger is expecting something over 6 volts for a 2S lipo (min 3volts/cell) so if its below 6, charger won't charge it. From the charger's prespective, this is a potential safety issue.

If you simply overdischarged it and its in good shape (not puffed), you can try to charge it as a 6 cell NiMH at 0.5 - 1amp ONLY until voltage is back up over at least 6volts, say 6.1 or 6.2volts. As soon as voltage is up, stop the NiMH charge and then charge it as a lipo - it should now charge normally.

Watch it as it charges to be sure it doesn't start to puff. If it charges ok and runs ok, it will prob be ok. If it puffs at anytime during this, its time for a new lipo as this one has become unsafe.

No, it just came like that. I plugged it in when I first got it to put a charge on it and the Hyperion said low voltage.

I'd still try charging as a NiMH to see if voltage will recover. These have been sitting somewhere a long, long time since self discharge on lipo is very low or they were not charged very much from factory to start with and have sat long enough to drop below the min voltage the charger will charge as a lipo.

Either way, from what I've read HobbyCity is pretty poor about doing anything about them. Send them email and they'll prob say send it back (your expense). I've seen where even after beingtold to send them back, after they get them they don't do anything.

My multimeter reads it at like 7.8v... I tried jumping it with the NiMH charger, no luck. I also plugged it into one of my escs and it wouldn't even power on. There must just be something screwed up with it. I did contact Hobby City and they wanted me to send it back...$20 shipping on a $20 battery isn't worth it. I guess I'll just trash it lol

Before you just toss it, take it apart, there may be something marginal about the main power leads where they connect to the cell tabs. These are known to have probs - they've also had soldering quality issues. This may be the lipo that has a small circuit board inside and connections are not good enough to let it flow current.

But, def agree, its not worth the bucks to send it back. This unfortunately is part of the zippy experience.

7.8v is fine for a 2 cell and should charge with out any trouble.
I had a similar problem with my 4 new 14.8 zippys....... It was the deans that came on them.
Try alligator clips on the deans and see if they will charge :D
The way I found it was I plugged the deans in 1/2 way and they worked.
I then used a very small screw driver and scraped some plastic off the inside and now there fine.

Another bad Zippy story. And guys still try to convince us to buy these and stop spending money on "over priced" name brand packs... Not gonna happen here:p

Out of the 10 or so Turnigy/Zippy packs I've bought this is the first one I've had a problem with so I still consider myself money ahead. I do have a couple high dollar packs and while they are nice they do the same thing the other packs do...make my car go.

I do however plan on slowly switching my collection over to the Hyperion cells but thats just because I want to be able to charge them at 5C.

I still have to find some time to crack it open. I've been busy with getting my new website up and running, painting a few bodies, and playing with my new SC10 lol

I'll let everyone know what I find. If it doesn't work I'll post a cool explosion video of it :)

before ya crack it open do you have a Multi meter? check the center lead(2mm bullet) for the balance tap from the bullet to the balance plug and make sure its not "open"... I have several of these packs and more than one had COLD SOLDER joints either at the bullet or fake deans... the joints at the fake deans i found quick as i replace them outa the box... the cold joints at the bullets caused me a few short runs before i just went through and resoldered ALL the leads. outa the 6 packs i have i haven't needed to open one yet for a bad connection... all the bad connections were on the leads:nod:

Took it apart, couldn't see anything physically wrong. But did ruin the case in the process. Oh well...gonna take it out in the driveway slit it open and put the hose on it and watch the fireworks. Might as well get some entertainment out of it.
