Default DSM, Pro, DSM2, Spectrum and Airtronics

I've tried to do some research on compatibility but I'm not finding the answers; please help.

1) I have an original M11 and original Specktrum DSM transmitter module and receivers, will the "Pro" receivers work with these?
2) How compatible are the DSM and DSM2 transmitter/receiver combinations?
3) I have a friend that bought the original M11 with the Airtronics 2.4Ghz modules and receivers, now they have an M11 version 2 and new Airtronics modules that we hear is not compatible with version 1, is that true?
4) We have also heard that the new M11 / Airtronics version can only handle 9 open channels (I understand my Specktrum handles 80), is this true? 9 options seems extremely limited.

My friend is looking to get his son upgraded from a cheap radio and get the same setup he has to keep everything interchangeable, but he is worried that he is buying into a dead path, or if he buys new he is heading into compatibility problems.

Thank you for any thoughts.

Default

1)The standard DSM module will work with the "Pro" receivers; it just won't operate at the higher framerate.

2)DSM2 Transmitters work with DSM receivers, DSM transmitters will not work with DSM2 receivers.

No clue about items 3 and 4...
