Best battery for the slash?
I'm planning on getting into racing the slash with my boys. It is a spec class so it will be the stock radio and esc. What is the best battery for this class with the best run time? I'd like to know lipo and nimh. I was looking at the venom 7 cell 8.4v 5000mah battery to run. Is this a good choice?

something like a 2s 35c 5000mah lipo will get the job done
Defintely the best way to go, but a quality battery of that caliber will cost almost more then the truck. |

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ducts_id/26108 http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...oducts_id/9704 24C, 4100 mah LiPo by SMC, nearly 100 amp continuous output, only $65, will be ordering that for myself later, for my VXL. 7-cell is good though, if you can't afford/don't want a LiPo set-up, ran 2 in my stock Slash, am also running them in it with a VXL. Try to stay away from Venom though, almost everything they sell is not that great. |
Run away from Venom as fast as you can!!!!! Their lipos have poor quality cells too from what I hear, I haven't even seen anyone use one, just that fact tells me there is a reason!!

Thje biggest issue I have is I have to buy batteries for 3 slashes for me and my 2 boys. So lipo is pretty much out of the question. So I guess a good 7 cell is what I'm looking for.

If you are thinking about racing at a local track, stop in to see what is legal there and you might get an idea what they are using by asking around. Our local track only allows 6-cell stick packs, no matched cells, or lipos. We have been running 3000 or 3600 wolfpacks with good results. Good Luck!!!

They may be more money to start with but I would go LiPo. They will last longer than NiMh and give more runtime and you will need less equipment, like dischargers and equilizers, to keep them maintained.

Don't get stuck on the 7cell Nimhs... they are great for bashing, but most tracks wont let you use them for racing. Even if you decide to step up to the "Mod" Slash class, they usually wont let you run anything other than a 6cell Nimh (7.2V) or a 2S Lipo (7.4V)

Venoms will let you down sooner or later, they are cheap, generic chinese cells put together with no QC. Sometimes they are fresh cells and some times they are not. These cells will be top notch -
http://www.promatchracing.com/products.php?cat=4 I'd consider getting these assembled in side by side if that will fit. Side by side is easier to maintain that a end to end style pac. |
I purchased a venom when I first got my truck with out knowing much about batteries and it is crap it doesn’t last as long as my other packs of the same mah. I would recommend the Orion Rocket Packs I love them and have real good luck with them I have them in 6 and 7 cell both work equally well.

Before you purchase any batteries I would talk to some guys out at the track about your specific "spec" rules. General rule of thumb is 6 cell NIMH (7.2v) or 2S (7.4) Lipo.
Once you figure that out go with a reputable company for your batteries. Spend a little more and get something that will last. Do your homework as well. Lipo and NIMH charge and discharge differently. With lipo you can also ruin a battery pack by over-discharging it. |
