HELP PLEASE

Hi,
new guy here.
i have a new 4wd truck with a little problem. this is only the 3rd tank of fuel run in it.
the accelerater servo is very eratic or jumpy. i swapped with my reverse servo and that servo was now jumpy.
the other problem is intermittenly the steering stops going right.
how do i determine where the problem is. the transmitter , the receiver that the servo's get plugged into ? or ???
the model is xht-280 from xtremehobby.com
any help would be appreciated.
thank you
Dave

Need more info: type of truck? Radio? You get it wet? Good receiver batteries?

racer1812 02-25-2009 05:40 PM

Sorry didn't see that you said what truck it was

get some real electronic and it will solve your probblem.... like name brand stuff

Best way is to swap in diff rx and see if that makes difference or not. If not, then swap to a diff TX. Can you get any help from where you bought it? Good lhs should be able to identify prob in a few min and fix it. If you don't have extras or live near someone that has the same equip, not much to do except replace.

You've made sure antenna wire is in good shape with no nicks, cuts or exposed wire. Ive seen some of this kind of issue that was solved by running antenna wire in fuel tbg to keep it away from chassis where it goes from the rx to the antenna itself. All connections in the rx are solid, crystals are firmly seated in rx and TX and you're using new rx batts (or freshly charged)??

Thanks for the input guys.
the radio says Sprint on it, the batteries mounted to the truck are charged and reads 6.5 volts.
the antena is nick free and the transmitter batteries are new and read 11.8 on the digital display.
i don't know much about the crystals so i can't tell you if they are good or seated well or anything.
i know this is not a big name truck, but i thought i would try a less expensive one to try before going nuts.
can i buy just a transmitter and receiver and it will work with what i have ?
do all receivers have the same type of plugs for the servos ?
when this truck was working right, it seemed pretty good and responsive. very fast too. i guess the quality is not what you are used to here.
the company i bought it from is helping and is sending some parts to me.
i think i am hooked, so what good named rc truck would you guys recommend ? 4 wd truck or bug or something.
thank you
Dave

How close is your nearest hobby shop? It can be tough to start in this hobby without some face to face help.

thanks Racer1812,
i thought of that the other day and called them. they asked where i bought it before anything else. i told them on line and they responded with get help on line. with the economy so crappy, i thought that was an incredibly bad answer. i tried to explain to him that if he could assist me in getting my truck going or tell me what i can replace i would be buying that from him. perhaps show me some better quality trucks that i an get from him. he responded with buy on line.
i'm sure i will get this going and will soon be buying a bigger and better truck and i do know where i will not be buying from.
i will check out this forum some more and see what some of the better trucks are.
thanks again
Dave

Incredible, I guess he has all the business his lhs can handle. What an attitude. Sounds like my experience when I bought a Tmaxx here. Obviously you touched a nerve when you relied online. His loss, not yours. The local shop I chose to deal with was because he was more than willing to work/help with something that didn't come from his shop. He caught a lot of my business for just that reason

Somethings changed to be causing these probs. I looked at the truck - looks well made, not a cheap rtr that breaks on the 1st run. Since the prob stayed when you swapped servo and you're having it with the other channel as well (strg), I'd focus on receiver, check that servo plugs are seated. Make sure where wires go is clean and has no dirt or anything that can short between terminals.

Open the radio box and find crystal, push down on it to make sure its seated. If its easy to reach and get hold of, pull it out and then re-seat it - has 2 wires that fit into socket like places in body of the rx.

When you talked with xtreme, what was there advice, what are they sending for parts to help?

Hmmm an LST knockoff. Interesting.

Check the linkage and connections on your steering servos (I assume Its running dual steering servos) Sometimes if the linkage on one servo is binding or if they're both not plugged in properly, one servo will drag the other down. We were having trouble with one of the lst2s here not turning to one side a while back...can't remember what the problem was at the moment, but I'll think about it and let you know if I remember.

Yeah most receivers have ....eh...pretty much the same plug setup. You might need to shave the tab off your servo plugs to fit some receivers if they have them and the RX don't but they can all pretty much be made to work. I'd probably do a little checking out of your current setup before I went out and bought a new radio package though.

As far as "what good named rc truck would you guys recommend ? 4 wd truck or bug or something." I'd stick with the one you've got for a bit. Depending on how close it is to an LST, it might just be a decent truck. You might even be able to use LST parts on your truck.

Some hobby shop owners can be VERY hostile when dealing with people that buy online and then come to them for help when things go wrong. If they would think about it a bit, you might turn out to be the perfect customer. If LST parts are interchangeable with that truck that is. Hobby shops don't cut a huge margin on kits, or rtrs. They make their money on parts, so who cares if you bought the truck online, as long as you're buying parts from them.

Servos

Double check the antenna wire make sure you do not have any extra coiled this can cause radio interference.
Do you have a friend with a car gas or electric take his receiver and plug in your car and see what happens.
Is the anteena on the TX removable make sure it is screwed in firmly.
Most of all make sure all wires are clear of metal, turn on the radio gear and play with each wire and takes note of any glitches.

Hi,
i just rec'd an e-mail from the guy at xtreme. he is sending me a new transmitter and receiver. his name is anthony and so far has been taking care of any problems i am having.
so far most of my issues (other than this one) have been dumb questions and lack of experience and he has walked me through all of it.
his first idea was battery related, but after doing a few things and testing the battery and charger he said it sounded like the receiver.
no steering servos are stuck, because when the truck is off, the turn freely. i can position them to the right and as soon as i turn on the truck it goes straight for a second then turns left and stays there.
if there were a problem with the antenna, is it common to have a problem with just 1 or 2 components not working ? or wouldn't all the components have some issues ?
as for the local hobby store, attitude about me buying somewhere else is one thing, being pissed about my past business getting in the way of my present and future business is just plain dumb.. i don't get pissed when someone buys from somewhere else then comes to me for help. i just think it's time to impress this guy now and get his future business. he'll learn.. maybe.
i will keep you posted on how it all goes.
thanks again for your help and input.
Dave

Sorry your local guy was such an A-hole. I have 2 shops within' 20 minutes of me and neither of them would treat anybody like that. I know both owners very well and I can tell you they wouldn't be happy that you got it online but they would still be happy to help you! They know that next time you'll probly get your next vehicle from them. I shouldn't even say this but if you really wanna slam that guy put his shops name on here! Not a real good idea but it would cross MY mind!

I'm not gonna put it like that but it is true that the higher quality stuff tends to have less problems and is usually better quality. On a side note most if not all the off brand stuff is made by companies that let the big names AE, Losi, Traxxas, etc. spend all the money and time developing new stuff and then they knock out a cheap copy to make a quick buck. Just IMO but that's just one more reason I buy name brand stuff.

what do you guys think of the hpi baja 5t ?
i saw one today and thought it looked pretty cool.
thanks
