Charging questions.
 

Hey guys Im pretty new to the hobby and I do have to say so far its a blast but I do have a few questions. Im using a 7 Cell 3700 battery pack and a Eagle Model D1-L charger that being said what would be the optimum set up for this combo? Like what Amp to charge at? And another thing I have noticed with the DL-1 is sometimes it will reach peak charge and show that it only has 800mah and sometimes it will say 3900mah... is it displaying the mah the battery has or the mah it put into the battery during that cycle? and help would be awesome. If you're bashing with these batts, good charge rate would be 3.7amps. If you're racing would prob want to charge at higher rates, maybe as high as 4.5-5amps. Peak setting - good start at 5mv/c. I'm not familar with your charger, some use peak setting per cell and some use a total, you should be able to tell which is needed.

Believe what you're seeing are called "false peaks". Charger sees enough of a current rise to think batt has peaked when it hasn't. The 800 is prob what it put in of the 3900 capacity you input. Just re-set and charge it again. If you're worried about what is going into batt, take note of charge before resetting so you can add it up when batt does finally get a complete charge. When NiMH batt peaks, it should be hot - 120-130F or so, I know its aggravating, but you may have to re-set it a few times until it charges all the way. Some chargers feature a peak delay recognizing this that lets you tell charger to ignore apparent peak for certain time so this doesn't happen.

I had false peaks with my 1st charger but only when charging at its highest rate. It was an AC/DC charger and I later realized I had it on a busy circuit in the house and when I was charging, if something else kicked on or was turned on, that was triggering the false peaks. I moved it to a lot less used circuit and the probs went away.

Thanks for the info. I tried moving it to another place in the house and it has the same problem. Is anyone familiar with this charger, and if so is it a known problem? Its really starting to bother me as I have used it around 7 or 8 times and only got a good solid charge out of it once. Thanks, Funk

I'm not familar with that exact charger, but if its a AC/DC charger, try it on DC (car battery). That should eliminate the false peaking, if it doesn't, try increasing the peak sensitivity 1 or 2mv.

If you've never charged off car battery, its not a big deal, just be sure you're not running the car while using the charger.

Thanks for the advise Duster. Now that I have cycled the packs a few time I am not noticing the "false peaking" NEAR as often. They seem to be charging properly now. Thanks alot for the help.
