I dont' really think it's a stupid idea to buy used. If you can I'd say get new, but that's not always the case. Sometimes you can find a great deal on use lipos. Like SMC 5000's for 50 bucks. I haven't seen those kinda of prices but still cheep for a pack you know is quality, and if not at least you'll be able to send it in to SMC to get it replaced, not sure about the replacments for the Zippy's.

Here is one from the rcracing site.

I have never had problems with the Zippys I have.

Piimpslap 02-18-2009 03:41 PM

I just picked up a pair of Zippys for a bone stock Emaxx and no complaints so far. We'll see how they fair after a few rough months of bashing. But for the price and qualites of Lipo, its perfect atm.

My mate who races boats uses them...apparently really good, best value "bang for buck" lipos on the market he says.

ANother who does not think buying used lipo is crazy - just be careful and be picky.

I bought a pr of Neu 2S 5000mah lipos that new were $125 each (prices have come down since) and paid $75 for the pair. I've put a lot of time and charges thru them and they're still doing great. They're running my Flux for a little while I decide on which 3S's to get.

Balancing - the idea behind it is to prevent overdischarge of a cell. If they get much out of balance, they canstay that way since charger is looking only at total volts (no balancer). Then low voltage cell can be overdischarged without lvc stopping it because it too is looking at totla volts. For a 2S with an lvc of 6v, 3.2v and 2.8v would still run. The cell with 2.8v would prob puff and then the lipo is pretty much done.

Balancing when charging insures the cells start off close together (good one, they are same) so you don't have a cell overdischarge. This is more of a prob on teh cheaper lipos as they go more out of balance than high quality cells like Kokam and Enerland. The higher quality lipos have matched cells and that lets you go without balancing cause they literally maintain teh same voltage for an incredible time.
