Capacitor or Schotky Diode?

Hi all,
I am using both a Tekin RS Pro ESC and a Orion Vortex Brusless Racing ESC Race Spec for both my 1/10th Touring cars. I am currently using a capacitor for each ESC.

Can someone please explain to me if there is a necessity to use a Capacitor and or Schotky Diode for both ESCs?
Why aren't such components pre-built into the ESC if it is so important?
What is the function and purpose of each component?
Is there a particular specification I should look out for to better optimise performance?
Can both components be used together?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I am trying to understand further.
Thanks in advance to all.

Well I know that Shotky diodes are only for brushed motors and only for forward only ESC's. What it does I'm not exactly sure. The capacitors store a little extra energy so you get a nice crisp punch when you stab the throttle. They probably aren't necessary but I would run them if I had them.
