I have been searching and am more confused now. My lhs isn't much help because he tells me noway lipo. So I will ask the all knowing RCTECH forum.

I want to get me sons a pair of slashs for Christmas and I want lipo so they can have decent run times. I was originally looking at maxamps rtr kit but that puts each vehicle close to $500. That is a little more than I want to spend. I like the inclusiveness not guessing on balance taps and not having everything I need come Christmas morning.

What I want to know is there a more economical way to go. I don't want to buy cheap stuff but if I don't need quite as "fancy" of stuff. I thought maybe the onyx 230 and maybe a cbp 4800 2s. But then I still need a balance thingy and a lipo bag, so am I that much cheaper than maxamps. I don't know nothing about lipo so I be confused. So please do not just post a link to a battery. I want everything I will need to run the slash.

I wouldnt get Maxamps lipos as they are way overpriced and there are cheaper batteries that have a better performance level than Maxamps. To name a few, Trakpower, Orion (has the best 2s battery, Orion 3800) Thunderpower, and Trinity.

Dude the Orion 3800Mah is $114 from tower. I just bought a 6500HV 30C From maxamps for $107 shipped to my door. I know the 3800Mah is a hard case and the MaxAmps I ordered isn't (my choice, still could have gotten a hard case which is $149) The Orion 5000Mah 20C HC is $129, I'd pay the extra $20 for another 1500mah any day. I'm sure you can always find "deals" but these are price I pulled from Tower Hobbies(Orion) and Maxamps(Duh maxamps)

I feel that the performance of the maxamps batteries are great, I hate when people post false information on here to someone looking for help. EDIT: I'm not one to start a "POST WAR" and I don't want to. I know I'm coming off a bit rude, but it's not my intention, I just want to provide accurate info...unbias info.

I have a Slash, and I would recommend ANY BRAND 2S 7.4V Lipo for your boys. Lipos are IMO much easier to charge. There's no guess work about what amperage to charge at. For a 6000mah your charge at 6amps, 3800mah-3.8amps, 6500mah-6.5amps.... get the picture? The charger will take care of the rest.

As for Lipos on the Slash, I ran my 6000Mah MaxAmps Lipo (haven't use the the 6500 yet) and after about 20min of crazy driving I only used 2130MAH out of the battery.

I understand the charging, it's the charger, balance adapters and all the different styles and connectors that kinda has me befuddled. I don't want to be trying to charge their batteries and find out I'm missing something and don't have time to get it.

And with that rtr package that maxamps sells can you really get completely set up for much less than that?

Honestly... NO I don't think you can get setup any cheaper than that. I think that if you do order the start up kit you'll get the 6500Mah instead of the 6000Mah. That's what happened to me, I ordered the 6000Mah, and they said they were sold out and gave me the 6500MAH instead... and now I can't find the 6000Mah on the site any more.

Everything about Lipos is expensive, but once your invested they last a LONG time. I guess if you've got the money to spend (these are hard times for some people) then the Maxamps kit would be a good deal. Let us know what you decide to do.

The biggest thing is I got to double everything. 2 boys. We just don't usually spend that much on them for Christmas, but it may be different this year.

Did you look at the MaxAmps RTR kits that has one chrage that can charge two packs at once? It comes with 2 6500's and all the other stuff for $549 Vs. the $600+ you would pay for 2 RTR kits.....BUT and this is a big but I don't think the "DUO" charger is an AC/DC chrager and that means that you would have to get an external power supply.

One of the most important things about lipo's is that you never run them down to low. With a smaller lipo it's going to happen, get the biggest lipo's you can afford and they will last the longest. Most people ruin there first lipo the first or second time they us them because they run them to long.

This is very important! The stock Traxxas ESC does NOT have a low voltage cutoff feature. If you do decide to go lipo invest in something like this.

Also another consideration for batteries are Neu Energy cells. 4900Mah cells here are $67. Good quality packs. Check the dimensions before purchasing though as, unlike sub-c stick packs, lipos come in all shapes and sizes.

If you have a hobby people near by you can get the truck,battery, and charger for 360+tax. Hope that helps
