Motor Testing
 

Hey guys, I've been trying to find information on testing/teching electric motors. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The two key factors I'd like to measure are RPMs, and amp. draw.

I think amperage draw can be measured using a multimeter on the wires when the motor is hooked up to a battery, right?

Does anyone make an affordable tachometer that can measure the speed of electric motor, without have to attach a prop or something to it?

Assuming you are wanting to tech brushed motors... I'd say look on the trading forum here or on ebay for motor dynos... With everybody going brushless i've seen some go very cheap...

Teching brushless is a little more complicated... you have to take them apart and test the can (which has the coil in it). With the power of brushless you can gear to your heart's content... just go for the power you need on the track without overheating the esc or motor (thermaling).

Yup, we're attempting to tech brushed motors. 540 silver cans, actually.

We need to be sure our spec class remains fair.

Looks like a good machine, but it has one strike against it: Price.

We're a small club, racing Tamiya minis. I think this might be overkill, especially at $500. I do appreciate the information, though.

I did some digging and have found handheld tachometers for under $50, and while I've still got some research to do, I have found some information on how to build a DIY shunt to allow a multimeter read amp draw safely.

The for sale section of the site looks like it might be a good option as well.
