Default Few lipo questions

I have a Reedy Lipo 5000 pro mah its 7.4v i was wondering if its good to discharge it everytime im not really using it. Also is it bad to run a lipo thru mud and water? I will be using a Great Planes Triton Jr. charger if that helps. Thanks.

Lipo will go for quite a while without losing much voltage at all, but for storage, I've seen 50 - 80% of capacity recommended. I lost some lipos due to puffing on long term storage at 50%, so I'm using 80%. Supposedly, its not good to just leave them just sit at 100%. An easy way to get there - charge to full capacity and discharge 20% (1000mah).

Mud and water - long as you don't short them out, I don't see what harm there could be.

Thanks, how long until they start puffing?

No set time frame - depends on cell quality, higher price cells will last longer sinc they lose voltage at a slower rate. I have some expensive NeuEnergy lipos and they behave differently than the cheaper ones I have. Prob also depends on age and how much its been used. No easy answer here.

One thing I can tell you, I lost 7 lipos when I went out of the country for almost 3 months - 11 weeks. they were stored at 50% and all of them puffed one cell. I had ones that had over 100 cycles on them and had two that were brand new, never used - had charged them, then discharged to half capacity. I try to run mine every month, but if I can't I discharge them and charge them to 80% - my charger has a feature where I just tell it 80% and it does the rest.

I charge mine 90-100% anytime i store them for any period of time... whether it be a week or months.

Water and mud can be tolerable but only so much... i wouldnt throw it in a pool if thats what your saying ^_^

Hmm, SMC recommends storing at 50% here. And 20-30% when using.

I think it means if you will be using it freuquntly (meaning in not too long) it only needs to be 20-30% capacity

I think he means when the pack is in regular use, I would take that to be at least once a week, keep it at 20-30% capacity. If in storage, keep it at 30-50%.

This seems contrary to your experience of bloating at 50% in storage...
