In car Lipo Sack...
So I got to thinking. We are supposed to charge and store our Lipo's in a fireproof container because they can sometimes be volatile. However I come from the old ways (read: lazy) of leaving a battery in a car and driving it/storing it/charging it without removal.
My question is what if I were to take a Lipo sack and cut it down to it just wrapped around the battery with the leads coming out. This should contain any fire I would think or at a min. decrease the danger. It would be relatively easy to do also by just about anyone that can cut and sew. What say you, my fellow RC heads? Is this an idea that should go up in smoke or worthy of testing out? |

How would you secure it in the car? Maybe a better question is why aren't the cases made of the lipo sack material? Or have a layer of it? |
I am running it in a brushless 3.3 Revo conversion. The battery container is secured with velcro straps that allow the holder to use anything from stick packs up to 6s Lipos.
The only hesitation I have is about heat. Would the heat be enough from the discharging/charging to cause more problems? I think that the added layers would help with protection from flying debris/crashes and what not. |
I just take mine out - but I'm sharing them across 8 diff rcs so thats just what I do. I think this lipo danger is overhyped, if you take care of them and treat them like you're supposed to, there are not going to be any probs.
I'd be worried about temps if you were to use a batt lipo sac. Lipos need circulating air and anything that restricts that could be detrimental. Lipos are being damaged when their internal temps get over 140F. Also, internal temps can continue to rise for a while after you stop running. Again, important they be able to cool. If your setup is hard on your lipos def don't need anything that may make them get hotter. If your setup is optimum and your batts don't get much above ambient, then shouldn't be any potential probs. |

They are bound to overheat in the sack, since its pretty thick.

Buy good quality hard case packs, use a balance charger or balancer when charging, don't overdischarge and you shouldn't have much to worry about.

If a LiPo batt blows up in a smaller sized Lipo Sack it'll tear it in a twinkling of an eye. Big Lipo Sack not only defends from the flying parts of the pack, but also from fire and it keeps an amount of gas which will blow a smaller sized package. Please excuse my englsih, I hope it's still clear.

odd solution but why not just take the extra 30 seconds and pull the battery out??? I can see the thread now.............. charged LiPo in car with bag, LiPo blew up and burned rig to the gound. :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Good idea? Maybe not so much.
Looks to me from some examples that the LiPo bag may not provide full containment of heat and/or flames. Looks like there's potential to transfer quite a bit of heat to whatever the LiPo bag is sitting on. http://www.liposack.com/Survivors/Jim_K..htm |
