Replacing Futaba R122JE - do i need to replace it with the same mhz as what the original R122JE was (27mzh I believe)? I say it is 27mhz because the crystal frequency was/is 27.145?

Yes, you will need the same Frequency Band, in your case 27MHz. 27.145 is channel 4, Yellow, within the overall 27MHz band. The other common frequency band is 75MHz.
Also needs to be the same type of radio transmission/modulation method: AM, FM, PCM, DSM, etc. I believe your R122JE is an AM receiver.
So you appear to need a 27MHz AM Receiver.

Crystal Frequency?
If i just replace the crystal in both the transmitter and receiver can i then just purchase what ever frequency receiver and replace it to match what ever is in the transmitter. 24mhz, 40mhz, 75mhz etc etc. and just put my 27mhz crystal in the receiver and the transmitter??
Or must the receiver be a 27mhz receiver to be able to use the 27mhz crystal, so on and so forth through the frequency range?

I'm not sure, but I think you need to have the correct receiver. A 27MHz for any of the 27MHz bands. Some combinations might work, but I sure wouldn't count on it.

If you're replacing your receiver you need to replace your 27 MHz R122JE with another 27 MHz receiver. You can't use another frquency receiver such as 24, 40 or 75 MHz. I'd recommend the Futaba R152JE as it's the same size as Futaba's FM receivers.
Be careful of using a different brand - just make sure the receiver works with your crystals. I bought a cheap FM radio for the receiver and extra channel but it didn't work with my Futaba transmitter so I returned it. The problem I had was that my 2 sets of Futaba crystals i had wouldn't work with the other receiver, but the crytal that came with the receiver would work with my radio. This I didn't have three channels I could use. AM might be different. Now that I think of it, I used different brand crystals in my Futaba AM radio I had without any problems.
