Tight servo
 

Hello, I need some help to get a servo for a Ball and beam proyect:

I have tried with HS-805BB because I need much torque, but it has too much looseness.

I use the servo to spin a 1 meter beam and it acquires inertia when it moves from a distant angular position.
As a consequence of this inertia, the beam bounces once achieved the desired position.

I want to cushion that bouncing as much as possible and I thought I could do it by changing to a servo:
- With metal gears instead of nylon gears.
- Of a smaller scale as smaller gears may have less looseness.
- Digital. As digital servos have more accuracy than standard ones, they should have less looseness.

Although I don’t need as much torque as I have with HS-805BB I need a strong servo.
What servo or kind of servo do you recommend me?

Does the servo need to be the pivot of the beam?

I would think it could be much more precise if the beam pivoted on a bearing or bushing and the servo with an arm was attached to the beam with a link at some distance from the pivot.

This would still provide plenty of travel, but better precision and less slop.

I think the JR 8711 is the strongest standard size servo I know of, then the JR 9110t, has like 370oz/in @6v

Craig, you are right and in fact that is the most typical configuration for the "ball and beam", but in my case the servo is the pivot of the beam.
I have also thought in Hitec Hs-5955th because it has the best gears and same torque as HS-805bb, what do you think?

The only high end Hitec I have is a 6965HB that came with a used car I bought here on rctech.
It has lots of torque and is very fast.
I can't feel any play in the shaft.

The smaller Hitecs don't center well at all. I only ran this one for about 10 minutes so far, but I haven't seen any centering problems so far.
