Saw headline about Lithium tech breakthrough

Howdy all,

Saw the following headline on Yahoo

"Breakthrough Could Mean 40-Hour Laptop Batteries"
http://tech.yahoo.com/news/nf/57832

Could somebody with a better understanding of Li batteries explain how this might affect not only laptop batteries but other batteries that are near and dear to our hearts. I was also interested if anyone knew how the Li batteries scale to larger size. Battery size being a major stumbling block for Electric cars(ful size), could this advancement be applied in that direction sucessfully?

Food for thought.

That article doesn't really say much about the cells. The two reasons that battery powered cars have not become mainstream is because of safety & cycle life. lead acid batteries, nimh, & nicds are all pretty safe. However, they have a short cycle life. Lipos have a long cycle life, however they are known to combust. Now, there is a company called a123 systems that has developed a cell that has a tremendous cycle life while being safe & stable. They currently have cells sold in dewalt batteries packs, black & decker battery packs, & they cells are going to be used to power chevys new hybrid car the volt. With the power that lipos carry there really isn't any need to push for more power in electric aplications. With battery tech where it is now there really isn't a need to advance technology atm for the r/c industry.
