Recommendation for a budgets ESC?
 

I need to replace my Trackstar 150a ESC on my Losi 8ight T and I am looking for recommendations. Up to this point, I haven’t had any issues with it, I’ve had it for about 5 years.

My son wants to build a buggy, so whatever I have in my Truggy, will most likely end up in his as well. Initially it was going to be another Trackstar, simply because I already had one. Now that this one needs replaced, I have the chance to change if there is good reason to.

I am running a 2100kv motor in the Truggy, fwiw. We do some me bashing and he wants to start racing.

Any thoughts?

In the scenario you posted, the HW XR8 SCT would be on the top of my list. If you decide to go with HW you can get the OTA programmer then if you go fully into racing and want the XR8 Pro you’ll be all set.

If you want budget and durability HobbyWing is the way to go. Castle Creations are a little more however even more durable and versatile.

Any issues running my current Trackstar 2200kv motor with this ESC?

There is a big difference in price between the Pro and non-Pro, I am guessing for entry level racing I don’t need to spend the extra money. Any major differences?

any advantage to buying the matches motor /ESC combo? I am not against that.

The XR8 SCT is perfect for racing or bashing 8th scale buggy. It's much smaller than the XR8 Pro (I have both). If you get it, I recommend mounting it on a bit of foam to help the fan last and getting the ProTek 30mm aluminum frame fan. The stock fan does not last long.

You can use sensored or sensorless motors with the Hobbywing ESCs, before spending more money give it a try with your motor. If you're driving at higher speed then sensorless vs sensored isn't as big of a deal. I guess there can be benefits buying a matched set, but not necessary, can mix and match as needed.

It's a good ESC... Just keep an eye on the fan and you'll be fine. Plus Hobbywing provides an extra fan with the ESC. At least mine did.
