There is no "best" battery pack that will boost performance. Just get 4 NiMh Eneloop batteries or a fitting LiPo/LiFe.

Any cheap NiMh AA have a high self discharge rate and probably need a fresh charge if you go out and race.
Eneloop batteries have a very low self discharge rate like LiPo and you can pick the transmitter and know is has (almost) the same charge as you have left it..

You could. I’ve got way too many controllers. Usually once a year I pick up a big package of Duracell AA.

Would get more life if you bought re-chargeable batteries and just re-charge when necessary.

Plus with NiMh you can keep an eye on their charge, many offbrand non rechargable AA batteries dump fast. Just get a decent set of NiMh batteries and never look back.

I use these (on a DX5R, not the Pro):

Amazon Amazon

I use this in my "old as dirt" DX3R Pro, and also installed one in my friend's DX5? (Not sure model). Removed AA battery tray, cut wires going to battery tray, soldered on servo plug to plug into the plug on the battery, and velcroed the new battery in. Lasts a LONG time on a charge, has a little higher voltage which "seemed" to make the radio feel more connected/responsive, and is pretty light. LIFE packs are far more stable and safe than lipo options as well.
