AMB loop : drive through it!?!
 

We use the same timing system at our indoor onroad track in the winter and outdoor offroad in the summer. At the offroad track we bury a homemade loop in 1.5" pvc using 14g speaker wire and a 470 ohm resistor in the middle of the loop. That worked well for the majority of the season except near the end of the season we started having counting issues so we used an above ground loop with no resistor to finish up the season and it seemed to work better. The same system then being used at onroad (except its an official AMB loop) we use an above the track loop and we were missing random laps during the first few races.

We changed the loop configuration such that the cars would actually drive through the loop. As in the loop went across the track about 12" off the ground, down and then under the carpet on the way back. Since we have been using this configuration we have not dropped a single lap. Anyone else ever try this setup? We were thinking of setting up a backup 2nd loop in this same "drive through" fashion at our offroad track.

A lot of drivers mount their transponders standing up so most signals are transmitted sideways. Be sure they are mounted flat .

I mounted my transponder on its side to keep the aesthetics cleaner on the car, but I was having problems with my laps not counting. Had a tough time figuring what the problem was until I mounted the transponder parallel to the ground. Solved all the issues I had and never had a problem after that

I have the transponder mounted both sideways and flat and have had no issues at any tracks . The race director should be able to tell if you have a weak signal but I am not positive on that but have herd race directors say to other people your transponder has a weak signal ?

Mine are mounted flat on various surfaces inside the cars and even they were having issues counting. Anybody else ever try driving through the loop?

keyword: SHOULD, But they usually dont, ESP if your not in the beginning of the field.

Theres this one time when I have 2 cars at the track and was going back and forth trying out setup. I took my back up car to practice with the transponder to see how my lap times are compared to my main car, but crashed into someone that jumped the track. I switched back to my main car for the race but forgot the transponder on the other car. We all lined up and everything but the race director still noticed that I my car wasnt registering for the race, they see 10 cars was on the field and thought everything was ok and started the race. I was fighting for 4th position and was clearly confused why my number wasnt called out, just to realized all my laps wasnt counted because my car had no transponder and basically threw out this main.
