Fried esc?

Ok...Im sure I'm not the first one to do this, but I crossed polarity for a split second and a white puff of smoke rose from my esc and it was heated up pretty good. I let it cool down, opened it up and didn't see anything melted or burnt. Resoldered everything back and powered it on, but only steering is working and my motor is making a very faint clicking sound. So...question is...is my esc fried and did I possibly damage my motor? Thanks

The esc is almost certainly fried, the motor will typically be fine once you replace the esc.

+1

All it takes is a split second... I would highly recommend reducing the length of the leads to make it impossible to reverse polarity ever again.... been there done that!

*** If you happened to damage a HobbyWing ESC, they will offer a deep discount if you do an RMA :)

Thanks guys. Yep it's fried. It's a tekin gen 2 and they offer an exchange to the gen 3 for $129 plus shipping. Wanted one anyway. Lol

In this era of running non polarized bullet connectors, how bout polarity protection in our speedos?!!! How hard can it be?

it can be done... with a loss of zero point six volts to the motor... and a added zero point 8 ohms of resistance...

Simple.. requiring less performance of speed controller.

Electronics 101...
my opinion.

proper connectors is better and cheaper.
better yet..... Red to Red,,,, Black to Black... like jumping a car battery.

read this thread.. if you might

Been lucky with a Reedy 510r done that a handful of times without failure. God I hate doing that. That sick feeling sucks.

Dean's connectors are easy to install and don't retard performance (much).

Something nearly everyone has done. When I ran straight bullets to the battery I used a bright red piece of heat shrink on the positive side of the lead and red nail polish on battery terminals. It really only takes on white ghost to never do it again... if you are careful.
