If Tamiya is looking at A123 technology, what will that mean to the current Lipo tech?

Marty
Hi Marty,
Sorry about my battery babble. I get excited about this sort of stuff.

It means that this gives A123 an actual shot of legitimacy.

A123 is one of those MIT startup companies that flew under the radar for years until Dewalt launched their lineup of cordless tools and then the GM started pumping in $30 million a year to get A123 to produce a hybrid car battery. I had some experience with A123 waay back when they released developer kits of their big 26650 cells (26mm diameter x 65mm long). They eventually released an 18650 size cell (18mm x 65mm - same size as your laptop battery) which is what is used in the Tamiya battery. It's a strange size (too small in diameter and too long), it's a strange voltage (about 3-3.3 per cell under load) and it's a strange capacity (only 1100 mAh per cell) for RC. Plus the fact that it's a different charge cycle than Lipo makes it practically unmarketable in the RC market.

People don't realize just how close Tamiya came to releasing their own hardcased lipo before they pulled the plug on that project.

Since Tamiya markets to a younger crowd in Japan, they were probably worried that some kid would charge his lipo with a NIMH/Nicad charger and set his house on fire.

Hence A123 - which is practically fireproof- at the expense of lower voltage and lower capacity. Tamiya even developed a specific charger for the A123 cell. Impressive.

To clarify the fan rule, the fan that comes on some escs does count as your one fan. We had people at Nats putting on 3 additional fans to cool the motor and esc which is rediculous.

Also, we are not trying to force people to buy things to run our series. We are trying to design our rules around what the market is making popular so that people can buy motors, escs, and batteries for our series and are able to race the same stuff in other series as well.

We wanted to make a unique GT class instead of jsut another GT class with a different motor. A LOT of people are racing the IFS style cars now, so we wanted to try a class for just that chassis to give it a unique look and feel. That is also why we went to 8-min A Mains.

I have a set of rear tires from the GT-01 12 tamtech car. they work great but are smaller in diameter . On my M04 car when I use those tires I slip on an aftermarket 22 tooth pinion so that i can keep up speed wise. We are all using new unbroken in 540J motors. Not that I faster than any one now , but I just a hare slower on the straight. The Kit tires are way out of perportion and well.. dont get the car low enough. So I ask you .. and this is for club racing... Whats the big deal. Everything on my car is tamiya except the 22 tooth. Some one tell me what the big deal is . I dont want to havve to buy more tires for the 04. And I just want to race the Whip. I hope you are reading this Eric... Chris wont let me use what I need to keep up . And I re-state that I wasnt the fastest car on the track. Do you want me to participate or not?

John,
No mater how you think it is OK to do what you do and think you are not cheating it is, Chris made rules and you are cheating. NO IF, AND's, or BUTS about it. You DO NOT practice what you preach, and bringing it up here wont get you any votes to your favor. You do nothing but stir the pot on all the Tamiya forums here and create havoc ( i have seen that you have made some friends over on the 416 post). Play by the rules or go home, i don't think you will be missed.

Weather or not you concider it cheating . I dont need to cheat to win. U know that. And I told Chris about the tires and the pinion. So if anyone has an issue with trying to be fair and concise about it . I just wont race my M04 and whip will just smoke all of you anyways. Simple fact is... Eric and I had fun. That was the best race of the night! But then again its difficult to admit to being beaten by the slowest car on the track. I have other cars to run and I dont want to spend more money on this one. If we could have raced with the sport tuned can instead of the 540J.. this wouldnt have been an issue. My tires are tamiya and if you look, (I'm no lawyer) The rules do state tamiya hop ups only . Ok , the pinion is stretching it a bit. whatever ... sorry to dissapoint you dish,, or chris, or mark .. or pseudonym to be determined.

It's my football.. I'm goin home!
