Default I haven't seen anyone talking about it yet, but AMB's patent is expiring soon.

It's set to expire on February 14th, 2023.
what does this mean for transponders?
Are we going to get some reasonably priced transponders now?
Cheaper timing systems?

They will probably change something to keep it proprietary, be it in the transponder or software.

Nope, nothing will change. If you want to work with todays standard then you are still stuck with Mylaps.I do not think the current RC4 protocol is given out of hands.

Because AMB/Mylaps knows several protocols the ending is highly on an older protocol.

I still use MYLAPS on the paid circuit. However, in the club circuit, IR equipment called lap monitor is actively used, and it is working very satisfactorily. One drawback of this device is that parts of the body must be pierced or kept transparent for infrared communication.
