Default Rear motor vs Mid motor in 2018

I'm sure I'm opening a proverbial can of worms here but I'm going to ask it anyways. Is there a place for a rear motor 2wd buggy or truck to still be competitive. In there part of the country there a little of everything and wanted an honest argument one way or the other. I'm not looking for a Mid motor rules kind of statement, I understand that the MM stuff if great on high bite tracks as well as carpet where as the rear motors are old tech made for brushed and loose tracks. with that said, what is more important? Tire selection and consistent driving or having the latest and greatest platform and missing the setup and wiping out one or twice a race? Not looking at doing any big huge races with big names just some local club style races.
