Just an idea,
On another forum I am on they have a thread called Username Change. In there a user can post what he wants his/her name to be and when a moderator has spare time they would go into the thread and change some of the username. Once username has changed the mod will edit the post and put done that way other mods will know what ones are done. It would take sometimes 2 - 4 weeks to happen depending on how busy mods were but it seemed to work.

Interesting that this is the only post to that point not shot down by a moderator.

That's rather harsh. Payment for services rendered sounds more professional and less likely to attract unwanted attention.
