Default Melted Battery

Today I was charging a set of 1500 batteries on my Super Brain 959. I left it to do its normal peak then beep to tell me it's done. As I was finishing some things up, my father happened to walk into the other room where the battery was charging. The battery was on fire and melting all over the linoleum. The charger's LCD display had turned black, and the charger was very hot. We threw the battery out, but I let the charger cool down to room temperature. I plugged it in and there is no display. I assume it's dead. How could this have happened? Was it a short in the battery, or a problem with the charger? Will MRC fix it if I send it to them? I'm very angry and worried.

I'm not familiar with this charger, but I'm assuming it's a basic peak model and shuts itself down.

If that's true, your battery never "peaked out"- the charger didn't pick up on the voltage drop and kept working, overloading the battery until it exploded. It's never happened to me, but I've seen it- and smelled it.

I'd assume the worst and guess it's the charger. Call MRC and find out.

Yeah, sounds like a short in the charger. They "should" replace it...good luck.
