First time I have gotten to try out the MkII on some r/c. Awesome camera. Gets shots I had a lot of trouble getting with the 7D.

Shot these in Temple Tx. Awesome turn out yesterday the parking lot was totally full.

I've been shooting with a 7D for a couple of years. Great camera but its old tech now. Going on 7 years old. My brother bought a 70D when it came out its sensor is pretty much the same as the MkII but the MkII has 2 Digic 6 processors instead of one and some features turned on the 70d doesn't from what I've read. The autofocus is the most improved part. Its amazing but they took the software from the 1dx their best camera and pretty much the focus array from the 5DMkIII. Pretty kick butt combination. There is one way to group the af points that perfect for framing an r/c car in the air. I went from getting 4 or 5 for every 10 I shot to 8 or 9. These are the first I've shot with it. I barely know the camera so they should get better soon.

Usually for r/c I use a Canon 70-200 f4L. My favorite lens. Small fast f number and not too expensive. Even new they are reasonable. On a huge track like ThornHill I will use my EF400 f5.6L sometimes but its really too big for r/c on most tracks. But when I go to COTA for the 1:1 races thats all I use. Also a 40mm STM pancake for the pit shots. I have a monopod with a gimbal on top. I usually shoot sitting down on my mobility scooter so that gives me a nice platform for the camera. Once you get it balanced its like zero G in all directions. The monopod has a fluid joint in the leg so that makes up for not being standing and able to twist to follow the cars. Took a little while to get used to it but now I wouldn't shoot without it. I love the 7DII its the perfect action camera. So many ways to set up the autofocus. Like for air shots you use a full screen or zone af. Nothing in the pic except the car so it makes getting them focused easy. But when you are following them you want a small focus box or a single point. Canon has a expandable box starts out with just 4 focus points but expands depending on where the object moves. But all that stuff just makes it easier its not necessary to get great shots. Just more work and less keepers if you don't have it. And don't expect to get all great shots. If I get 10% I feel great. I shoot 3 shot bursts for r/c. Usually the 2nd shot in a burst is better focus. Haven't done that much r/c shooting this year. Been working on the robot. But we are about to move to San Antonio and I won't be 100 miles from a track so I expect I'll be out shooting most weekends after the first of the year.
