Different number of cells are needed in differen application, like 4 cells 1/12th cars and 4-6 cells touring. Lightning V2 is designed for discharging 1 to 6 cells battery pack without any modification, no problem from switching one application to the others.

With the increasing capacity and lower internal resistance of today’s battery, higher discharge current is desired. Traditional 30Amp resistor or light bulb based discharger can discharge battery quickly but will also make it very hot and lead to a longer cooling period before next charge. Also, these resistor/light bulb based discharger do not have cut off features and will eventually bring cells down to 0.00V and may permanently damage the battery. A closer eye is needed to monitor the dimming of the bulb (and needless to say, you can’t cut off cell individually). Some 30/35 amp pulse discharge systems are introduced to solve the heat problem. Since 30/35Amp will put high stress on battery as well as the discharging circuitry, those systems need to use shorter discharge and longer rest cycle to relief the stress, rendering the long discharge time issue unsolved. Lightning V2 takes a balance among these factors and adopts a 20Amp pulse discharge algorithm. A fully charged 4200mAh battery (~4400mAh) can be discharged to 0.9V per cell in about 30 min, which is twice faster than existing 30Amp/35Amp pulse discharge systems. Battery temperature can also be kept lower to minimize the damage to it.

Only pulse discharge is not enough to discharge and equalize a battery pack. Each cell should also be individually dicharged at a lower current. In Lightning V2, battery will change to A.C.C.S. 2 (Automatic Current Control System 2) after 20Amp pulse discharge until it reach the preset cut off voltage and current.
In A.C.C.S. 2, discharge current is controlled by six individual PWM channel through six power MOSFET (no bulky and inaccurate discharge resistor involved!). The computer controlled PWM channel will automatically control the discharge current from 8Amp to 1Amp and cut off cell individually depends on user setting.

For easy operation, cut off current is represented in 10 levels (XDL0 - XDL9). it can be observed that cell voltage can be kept at a constant level by adjusting the discharge current. Battery pack is more balanced if Lightning V2 is used all the time.

Hope this info helps
