Default Painting a moon on styrofoam. Help!

I have a co-worker that is moving to the lower 48 next week. We've worked together for years and he's always been a bit of an odd ball. He's one of those people that thinks we never actually landed on the moon and that it was always a big conspiracy. He's still a pretty good dude and we've had a lot of laughs over his crazy moon landing theories. As a going away gift, I bought a 12" diameter styrofoam sphere that I am going to paint to look like the moon. It's going to have a three inch astronaut standing on top and a gloss black base with stars on it and a plaque that says, "It's a conspiracy!". I bought some plaster that model railroaders use to make mountains. I've already applied that and it is drying. I filled in all of the gaps in the styrofoam so that it is a smooth surface. I just need to sand it down. Tomorrow, I need to get some paint. I'm thinking a light grey color for the base color of the moon and a slightly darker grey that I can airbrush on for the craters. I would like it to look like the moon and for the craters to have a little depth to them. Any suggestions? Also, I still want it to be light enough that we can all sign our names on it with a fine point sharpie. Thoughts or tips?

funny story, I know someone here that uses latex house paint on styrofoam and claims to have no issues with that. Mabey use it for the base coat and then a WB for the AB work.

The Craft stores like Hobby Lobby sell an aerosol paint specifically for styro. All typical aerosols have solvents that melt styro immediately.

Any WB airbrush paint will work, as mentioned.

If you Google how to make styrofoam Halloween headstones, you will find lots of info on it...painting, sculpting, etc. that may aid in your moonscape project.

I have used paints that distort styro for a similar project. I wanted to get a texture on there so I intentionally let it eat away at it. Just a thought
