Default Airbrush Specific Compressor *Suggestions/Help

Using with an Iwata.... HP-C Plus

Replacing an Ancient Badger 180-11 With a Iwata Moisture Trap.

Specs I could find:
1cfm @20psi

So not much. Here are the three Im looking at.

Likes:
Quietness
Weight
PSI
Portability

Grex 1/8 HP Portable Piston Air Compressor
http://www.dickblick.com/products/gr...sor/#itemspecs

Iwata Smart Jet Compressor
http://www.dickblick.com/products/iw...r/#description

Paasche DA400R Air Compressor
http://www.dickblick.com/products/pa...ir-compressor/

Quietness: ?? Im assuming the Paasche comes in last.
Iwata: ??
Grex: 55 dcb
Paashe: ??

Weight:
Iwata: 8
Grex: 11
Paashe: 12.2

PSI:
Paache 1.48 CFM
Grex 0.7 cfm
Iwata 0.64 CFM

FWIW all of them have at least 10psi pressure more than current Badger.

Portability:
Grex: With the nice handle
Iwata:
Paashe:

Price is nothing beyond $260, so if you have more options you think are good please let me know. Again looking to upgrade, not side grade specs, with a compressor just for Airbrushing.

I have used one like this one

http://www.dickblick.com/products/pa...r-compressors/

for nearly 6 years now and it does all I need it to do for airbrushing.

Thanks Dave, but since the Paasche has no specs listed, at least how loud is yours (even though the one I linked is dual head, can get an idea).

It's reasonable. I use it indoors in my work area, and if I close the door, my family can watch TV in th enext room. I work near it for hours without complaints. It is not silent, but it's not as loud as a pancake compressor for a nail gun.

If you find a retail store that carries them, just ask them to turn it on.

I used to have a Badger 180-11. It is equal in sound to that, I would say.

But that dual head Paasche is going to be louder than a single....so the D500 should be right there with the other Paasche model you are considering.

If you like, I will snap a short video with audio and post it, like Ridgeway did with his compressors.

BTW, I just clicked on that Grex unit...it is a Paasche D500 clone, rebranded for Grex.

If you like. However, how are your drawing the conclusion the Grex is a clone? Look closely at the body minus the attached parts and it has a totally different vent system. Head, and I cant tell because of the pictures, but there is that side port knob on the Grex. The grex at least according to the specs has more output pressure as well. That and weighs three pounds more.

Grex makes pistol grip airbrushes.

Right now I'm leaning towards the iWata simply because the local blicks has in stock, though I'm sure I could order in a Grex or Paasche.

Yep, actually the Grex is a piston and the D500 is diaphragm.
I stand corrected.

what is holding you back from a larger, cheaper more effective compressor with a higher cfm rating? If its the noise, have you thought about a remote installation?

I have a paasche d500 rs, and its ok for detail work, but I quickly replaced it with a 21 gallon shop compressor that works great for the same price, I just keep it in my spare bedroom, and since my brushes have mac valves, i never pay attention to the compressor.

just a thought...

Chemdoctor.. What do you mean by "ok"? Does it pulsate too much? Not enough pressure?

And why what Im looking at versus industrial? I have to cart it around by hand, keep under my desk, not bother others on other floors as much as possible with rattling. If you can point out a micro industrial that isn't super loud, I will look it over.

I wonder if this would be a good compromise though? Since it actually has a reserve tank to help with no pulsations.

BTW Dave, the 500 is a piston based.

These economical, oil-less, one-phase 60Hz piston compressors h

Hell, just run a cheap air tank in line if you want a reserve, might be cheaper... Hope you find what you are looking for!

Pulsations is exactly the reason i went with a larger compressor, kind of a pain when doing detail work lol.

Any recommendations? Like 1/4 gallon or smaller tank as that's the size I could cart easily along with a separate compressor. Didn't look in detail last time I thought about doing inline, but I didn't see any like that.

Even with a tank, still would prefer a new compressor of some sort.

This is the closest I can find.

http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-St...833501&sr=1-19

http://www.amazon.com/VIAIR-91005-Vi...sim_sbs_auto_5

Neither have a bleed valve, though the first probably could be modded for such with 3 ports. But $35 just for the tank? Firestone offers a 1/4 gallon one, but its $60..... Argh!

I ended up getting the smart jet. They had a 40% off online coupon for instore instock items. So I ended paying about $160 for it. Thats way cheaper than I have seen online.

Haven't gotten to use it yet, but it seems excellent quality and slightly less loud than my badger with a bit more pressure. Smaller and lighter as well.

I still may invest in one of those 1/2 gallon tanks for further pulsation reduction if needed. But like I said, I got a damn good price on it.

Also FWIW.

I always used my large compressor in the garage with a water trap and dual reg's to keep everything nice and even. Well that system is long gone and I want to start spraying again. The only compressor I have is a super small rig that takes way to long to air up bike tires, let alone keep up with a airbrush. So I was looking at this...

http://www.usartsupply.com/airbrush/tc20t.html

does anyone have any experience with this brand? Would I be better off getting another bigger compressor and just regging that one?
