Default First time airbrusher!

Hi Guys,

I know you probably get a lot of these, and i am currently going through this thread to find as much info as possibe but there are so many threads and posts it is hard to read them all. And i think new thread plus reading as many old ones will give me more info

Decided to finally take the plunge and try my hand at airbrushing, i have a Passche VLS on the way. Basically where do i start?? What do i need to know before i start spraying?? I have never airbrushed before so complete noob sorry, gotta start somewhere though.

ie, thinning the paint, what paint is out there to use, cleaning the brush etc.

All help and advice is much appreciated. Back to searching the forums

Well, I'm like you, I'm just starting out, just got my VL in today.

I have been reading about airbrushing for about a month. I'm assuming you have everything you need, but I'll list what I bought so far..

Small walmart air compressor
Pressure regulator (husky home depot)
Water filter (husky)
50' air hose
airbrush
I'm using createx paints to start
various couplers for the compressor
teflon tape
I'm sure there's more, and I'll add later as I can think..

I started out tonight. I filled the cup with some black, and went through about 30 sheets of printer paper spraying dots in various sizes, trying to make them all look the same.

I also practiced my dagger strokes, trying to make them straight and similar each time.

I brushed about 10 pages worth of lines, trying to keep them straight.

The best thing to do is practice on some paper, get the feel of the brush, learn how to control the flow of paint. Also I'm trying different pressures and tomorrow I'm going to thin the paint some, and try different pressures.

Once you've got control over the paintflow, and a steadier hand, try some stuff on 2 liter bottles. I also bought some 8x10 lexan sheets from home depot, I'm going to paint a few things for my son as practice.

Createx is water based, so cleaning was easy i guess, wash out the color cup, take off the tip and needle and wash them with water.

I may have done this wrong, but I let some water flow through the part of the brush where the color cup attaches and washed that out.

Basically you just need to get in there, hook it up, and spray.

Hey, my airbrush turned up today, have the compressor with regulator and moisture trap.

I am rather confused about the paints though.......
You mentioned Createx, is that just to practice with? Or are you going to do the actual RC shells with that paint?

You can use Createx on lexan. It's not the best formulation for lexan, but it still works very well.

I read through that link, will help a lot thanks Dave.

Because these are water based do you need to back them with anything in particular?? Or do they just need some heat and time to cure?
