Just as the Professor said, shelf liner is what I use too. I've seen it for $2 a roll and $40 a roll. So, shop around. You can also use fabrics with open weave: I did a motorcycle tank many years ago with lace as something to airbrush through. It gave it a unique look. It was a vampire scheme.
One thing I do additionally, that you can see in the photo below, is to blacken the edges of area that frames the faux carbon fiber. It makes it look more realistic. You can streak it a little too. Not really period correct for VTA, but I like the look.

Another way to do faux carbon fiber is with an applied graphic film. That's what Chuck (another Indy RC racer) did with this J71. It looked awesome.

Ed's car looks great on the Indy RC track. Its interesting how some overhead lights make colors pop, and other colors mute. The lights at Indy RC don't seem to like red much. Bright red looks dark red. Blues, greens and neons look good there though.
