i use vinyl dotted mask to achieve the carbon effect using spray cans not as realistic, but very easy to do for my race bodies (that get trashed in just a few races )

Drawer liner is definitely the way to go, be sure to get the "square" pattern and not the more random zig-zag pattern which seems to be more prevalent these days.

First apply the liner on the body and spray a 50/50 mix of faskolor charcoal and silver. Plain charcoal would actually look more like actual CF, but I find that with a little added shine it gives it more texture without being unrealistic.

Remove the liner and backcoat with black, and thats it your done!
