Stihl engine in 1/5 scale car?

Stihl engine in 1/5 scale car?
Well I have worked at a Stihl dealership now for 10 years. I also have been into RC for over 20 years. I am curious to know if anyone has ever taken a Stihl leaf blower, trimmer, or chainsaw engine of any kind and put it in a 1/5 scale chassis? If so what engine and what chassis? Any help is greatly appreciated. It looks like I will have a project like this in the works within the next six months if it is possible to do.

people have done it in 1/5 scales. overall, its disapointing. industrial engines are designed to run at a lower rpm and put out way less power than an engine designed for r/c (or go-peds), such as the zenoah and cy 23-30.5cc engines.
i think most of the people who have done them have been trying to save money putting together a cheap 1/5 scale they have bought. the end result is by the time you figure out how to mount it, get a clutch figured out and make everything work, you can buy an r/c engine. the cy 23cc goes for around $150 brand new, used ones can be had for $100.

The engine you are looking at in this project of mine is a 27,2 ccm Stiga weedwhacker-engine
It turned into a screamer just by changing the carb(had to build a new inlet manifold though), and i have yet to try it with the tune pipe. I have used the same pipe on antoher car i have built with a 44 ccm Jonsered chainsaw-engine. It has a huge amount of torque.
So go ahead, i will follow your project closely!

ya you can use it yes it will have alot of torque but it will still be slower than any 1/5 scale motor out there by far...

Well thanks for the input so far. So it sounds like no one has a proven way to do such a project? My guess is the hardest parts to figure out are carburetion and the clutch mount? Thanks for the input keep it coming. I'll let you know when and if I start this project.

your gonna have to make sure you can gear it high enough also because a chain saw motor only turns about half the rpms...Doesn't matter what carb or pipe..Its all about the porting, timing these motors have...There are a few companies out there that have taken these motors and converted them for rc's but it isn't cheep.. I would contact oneill brothers racing and find out some more info...These guys are awesome and will answer your questions even if you don't buy there products..

So the typical chainsaw engine turns between 12,500 and 14,500 on the top end. You're telling me a 2-stroke RC engine turns double that? That's a lot.

One thin STihl has that will eventually make it into rc is the direct case injection system

Lars I saw your thread but where does it talk about how to fit a Stihl engine into a 1/5 scale and what Stihl engine to use?
#11
i would like to know what you will be using for a clutch as most 1/5 clutchs engage at 6k, 8, and 9.5k...It wouldn't leave you much usable rpm's with a 12k redline...

Ok, so it is specific "Stihl-eninge-mounting-how to you" are looking for? Sorry, it says nothing about it. This is something you have to work out by yourself, as i have done. Or trust in some luck not yet known to man that someone else has done the same with a similar engine to yours. I thought it might help you getting some ideas on how to arrange the clutch and such. After all, the engines are not that different.

Hmm well the clutch on the saws engages somewhere around 3200 to 4000 rpm. If I do use an rc clutch there would not be much range. I'm going to have to do some experimenting with drive ratios.

It can be done. I used to race open 2 cycle karts with a guy that quit and started racing rc boats. He started building and selling engines for the boats because he set a few world records with his engines. I use to see him at the city auctions and he said he was looking for a certain stihl weedeater for the engine off of it. I know he was really good at modifying engines and he would change the port timing and could make them fast. That being said I'm not sure how fast they would be stock but it would be worth trying for sure.

Screw using the whole engine. LOLz.
You might have the resources to likely figure out a way to mount Stihl fuel Injection to a Cy or Zenoah engine. That would be a sweet, and a profitable kit to sell.
