A quick review of what happened
This being the fourth season for the traveling road show, it's looking to be the biggest season yet, by far. We had 84 registered for the first race which was held at Marshall's Hilltop Hobbies. The day ran into a few minor computer problems which created a little longer day than was expected, but all in all, things went rather well. I'd like to personally thank everyone who showed up to race. Despite my own racing headaches, I really had a good time.
The day started off with some concourse judging. Selecting the winners for this years race was a lot tougher than it was last year. There were several cars capable of taking home one of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place awards. The final winner was Frank Mertz who had painted an awesome looking black with flames Dodge Intrepid. It was loaded with details, hood pins, window clips, even the fuel overfill tube. It had really sharp looking graphics that just made it stand out. Gordie Beidler got 2nd with a 'Beekman' painted Mountain Dew Intrepid and Barry Braman got third with a Chase Motorsports pontiac body. There were several other really good looking cars too. Check out the ORL web site for some photos of them.
Street Spec saw the winner of last years 'Winternationals' repeat his excellent performance once again. Tony Fisher took the top qualifying spot with a blistering run of 53 laps in 4:01.69. How'd he do that? Then, in the main he once again showed the way around the track with his red & white Monte Carlo TRC Spec 10. Following Tony was Kenny Fisher in 2nd, Dan Ostrander in 3rd, Craig Thuman in 4th, David Dries 5th, Frank Colanglo 6th, Mike Kowtko 7th and Colton Lenz in 8th. Joey Fisher won the B-main.
The Sportsman Outlaw, 4cell stock, class saw some really close qualifying times. But after 3 rounds it was Kevin Griffie on top with a run of 55 laps in 4:01.60. Kevin was able to take advantage of that pole spot and go on for the win in his black & blue JG Motorsports Trinity Switchblade. Second qualifier Everett Lane had to settle for 2nd with Jeff Cuffs finishing in 3rd followed by Doug Parisano in 4th, Lance Cranmer 5th, Ray Gulliver 6th, Keith Macedo 7th and Gordie Beidler in 8th. Jeff Wise won the B-main, Frank Mertz won the C-main and Buddy Hartman won the D-main.
The Super Outlaw, 4cell 19turn, class continued from last year as being one of the most competitive classes in the series. Mike Valentine was able to put his Putnam Pro-Pulsion car on the pole with the TQ spot, with 61-4:01.10, but George McCauley, who snuck in the back door qualifying in 8th, was the big upset of the day. George, in his orange & silver O'Neil Designs, Team Outkast Dodge Intrepid, stayed out of trouble and cleared all obstacles to take the win starting from the back row. Mike Valentine was left with 2nd while Frank Mertz finished in 3rd. Top 3 all finished within a second of each other. Paul Heitz was 4th, Doug Parisano was 5th, Bill Osborn 6th, Ray McCollum 7th and Alan Behler 8th. Jeff Cuffs won the B-main, Steve Flynn won the C-main and Jerry Billmyer won the D-main.
The Pro Outlaw (4cell modified) class had Jason Scheffler with the Sure Shot right to the TQ spot with 64-4:01.75, after three rounds of qualifying but in the main it was Mike Valentine and his black Putnam Pro-Pulsion Monte Carlo Hyperdrive car taking the win after an extremely close battle with Scheffler. It was an awesome race to watch. Schreffler held on to finish 2nd with Shane Kocher in 3rd, George Verbonitz 4th, Jose Colunga 5th, Scott Karcheski 6th, Steve Miller 7th and Alan Behler 8th. Jeff Frindt won the B-main.
Next up on the tour is race #2 at Trains & Lanes Hobbies in Easton, PA. Should be a another great time. They are having a warm-up race the night before, March 9, with all the entry fee money going to 'Habitat for Humanity'. A great charity cause. There is also a raffle, along with some other things, being done to help create a sizable amount for the charity.
