Engine Cleaning

Engine Cleaning
Just wondering as part of your weekly engine pull down and clean if you bother to remove and carbon build up underneath the piston etc? Will vary depending on type of fuel being used, but also get a buildup on top and around the buttone and glow plug as well.
Thanks in advance

Yes I do it after every meet as don't like fuel sitting in engine rusting things. After a meet is finished I always run motor out of fuel and add ARO, but just go a step further with a full pull down and clean. I have tried using toothpaste to try and remove carbon buildup on top of the piston, but it doesn't remove it all.
So Braso Silver polish is the go and would be better? Also have heard of people lapping a piston and sleeve on a new motor and no fuel being used to run it in at all.

as long as you donot use trans/fluid for after run I used it after 2 races and it left a big mess under the piston

very helpful reading. i'll definitely provide my results as soon as i'm able to test these cleaning methods. so far, all i know is ARO..
what exactly do you mean by button? can anyone provide a link with a labelled broken down engine for an example?

After i have finished running my car i will start it up disconnect the fuel line from the engine and run it dry. Once it will no longer fire up i will add After Run Oil down the glow plug hole and turn it over a few times to move it around the engine. Ensure piston is at dead bottom centre of the stoke before putting it away for the day. The day after i have run my car i will pull the engine out clean the outside using automotive carby cleaner spray, and then pull the engine down and every part and check bearings and conrod for any play. Once its dry i rebuilt it lubricating it with ARO and then it is ready to go again.
Not everyone does this, have been reading the off road forum guys just empty tank and rely on oil in the fuel to protect against rust forming.

I polish the head button. Seems to idle/run crisper..
What do you guys run for after run oil?
I hear Marvel oil and ATF damage the ceramics and crank putty..

I find flushing the bearings of castor residue is the primary task. I use brake cleaner to do it. Also polish the outside of liner only below the ports, I polish the button and the top of piston being very careful not to go too close to edges. I use alu mag polish then hand lube with two drops on bearings using an antioxidant gear oil that I've tested not to react with fuel. Also carefully clean the bearing seat on crank to ensure everything assembles snug and tight

I clean and inspect my engines But i have never seen carbon build up like some people see. I run oddonnell fuel and I've run gallons threw my motors and I've never seen actually carbon build up. I get just some discoloration of the piston after a lot of fuel has been run threw the engine.
What do you guys mainly use to polish the engine components. Just a type of cleaner wax or aluminum polish
