serpent deserve to do somthing for those who have bought the motor rather than they do nothing.....to be frank, the motor is pretty fast but the rod issue let everyone step out...

The same questions are why .12 engine lost its compression faster and more difficult to tune than .21 engines?

Hey Deniz.
No it doesn't loose compression faster.
12 engines has smaller piston diameter and tollerances on smoller sizes are tighter then on bigger. If you look 60, 65 or 90 size engines, they last much longer. Pistons there is etween 25-29 mm diameter and tollerances there is much greater.

Picco company been in bussines I think more then 25 years and this means something. If you know how many records were set up by using PICCO engines you will be ammezed. They had issue with conrods and I do belive it was fixed. This is one of the company which I belive can be trusted to their expirience and expertise. I saw their engines running and they are pretty good. I am sure something can be improove there, I would make P/S set with conrod (not because they are bad, because I have different view and different theory on porting), 12 mm cranck is very good idea and I am sure they are much stronger then 11.5 mm. It can be lightened, I have idea where extra metall can be remove from cranck, but have never had one for experiments. May be one day I will put my hands on it

I just got my engine back from Serpent, from day 1 it ran at 290+...it even reached 342!, but I sent it back to Serpent and had them go over it. They replaced a few items and said it was "A-OK". Replaced the con-rod, plug, carb O-ring and put some extra shims in it. Took it out to play today, it was at 270. Worked on carb settings for over an hour, but got the temps down to 213 doing speed runs up and down my block. Had the dogs chasing it, (actualy, I turned the car around and chaised them a bit too) ),

But what I discovered was that the engine is a pain to tune, it needs to be tuned differently than any other. I tuned it for running, not idling. If I was doing a standing start, the engine would load up and shut off on me in about 30 seconds. But if you run it, it clearss out quite well and runs FAST as HELL and stays cool. I'm 4 3/4 turns out on the bottom and 3 1/2 on the top. It looks like a fog machine, but got 6 min chaising the dogs around. Going to race it this weekend. If it gives me any issues, its outa there and the Novarossi is back in.

PIcco based .12s are notorious for being hard to tune. The carb cant hold a tune, you have to keep after it more so than other engines. What I did was to put a Nova carb on it, and then the engine runs very good, pretty fast too.

Ed, I'll be eager to wait for you to make a "hop up" for this engine.

Are you referring specifically to the Mega engine or the Picco?

Just browsed some results from the Ozzy New South Wales Championships...

Pos Driver State Car Engine Laps Time
1 D Campbell NSW Serpent 710 Mega 93 1814
2 K Hazell NSW Kyosho RB 91 1809
3 A Millford QLD Mugen JP 90 1816
4 J Davis Vic Mugen JP 88 1800
5 P Woodbury NSW Kyosho JP 88 1815
6 S Camelleri S.A Mugen JP 83 1815
7 C Hawkins NSW Kyosho RB 80 1802
8 A Bardetta NSW Kyosho RB 72 1800
9 S Grant NSW Serpent 710 Mega 34 1800
10 C Reade NSW Mugen JP DSQ DSQ

Although by right no. 10 won the race, it's a worthy mention that the Mega triumphed in the field of JP, RB and Max engines.

If any of you down under guys saw or participated in this race, perhaps you could chip in a thing or two on what you witnessed.

I don't think any of the engines need modding. This thing runs the pants off just about everything out there stock. The 2 that I have seen were box stock that popped.

All the ones I have seen break conrods are totally stock. I was told by a factory team driver that Serpent has told them they have to run the engines standard at the moment.

Whether its true or not I dont know. What I do know is the power difference between the team drivers and the joe blogs was not normal

I might be loosing the edge on some parts of the body with age but my eye sight and hearing is still perfect ( I hope)
