one thing still confusing me,,
how long break in takes, until the engine reach its peak rpm? i just did 5 tanks with medium idle. its still cant gain its high rpm,, not even enough to engaging the clutch.

90% or how the engine runs regardless of runtime is carburetion settings. If your engine won’t run correctly, you need to tune it correctly. A new engine should idle on its own from brand new out of the box. If it won’t idle, you adjust it so it will. You also adjust it so it will rev out cleanly but still rich to get adequate heat AND lubrication.

The break-in process for sure takes longer than 5 tanks, you do need to adjust it leaner to get more out of it. Again, there is no perfect setting on the needles, that will be different with different type of fuels, exhausts, fuel lines etc but also from day to day with different weathers.

Novarossi MITO. 12

MITO. 12. Not the WC version
question is should I shim the head 1mm running 25% nitro and retune. I set carb settings back to factory

It took home a 1st and 3rd at Steel City Raceway's Ko Propo Grand Prix this weekend in LA. Great event with an excellent turnout of 44 1/8th Open quality drivers: Dj Apolaro with the TQ and Podium and Kimbrow, 2nd Qualifier and 3rd place finish.

206 entrants with 165 unique drivers. 22,177 laps :)

hey rich what an event !! that was one for the books!! rich the new nova's they were using do you know if they were 7 or 9 ports? also were you able to tell how they were doing on runtime? thanks

dj apolaro 06-27-2018 05:11 AM

The new motor is a 9 port. As for runtime, I am not exactly sure. I can say that the track was very hard on runtime and people in 4 minute qualifiers were running out of fuel. Scott and I made runtime in all quals.

Scott's Mephisto made outstanding power and had good run time compared with most of the field. As DJ said the track is thirsty - a lot of "on-power". I liked how stable the tune was - we made excellent power at a very low temp. The motor never showed any signs of stress, same plug through the event, no distortion. We got the "off the shelf" Mephisto on Wednesday, RC Target had prepared it using the EBIS break in system, got a tune on it and never looked back. We had run Mito's all day Tuesday, Scott's car was blistering fast, so we had a great baseline to compare. The motor is a definite keeper!

Steel City Raceway is a fantastic facility. It is a MUST run. The Goodwine's have created an incredible experience for the RC Racer. A great big thank you to them!!!!

DJ - care to share pipe, header, plug?

dj apolaro 06-28-2018 07:44 PM

I used the motor with 2015 pipe, 6 fin header and 8 nova plug. I also shimmed the motor to .75, Stock is .7.

dj, why did you go up to .75 ? did you use 25% fuel?

dj apolaro 06-29-2018 03:43 AM

I did use 25%. It made it easier on the nova plugs. Less stress and safer on the plug.

thanks dj, sorry one last question, we don't often get you on here so we need to pick your brain as much as possible !! lol
dj you went with the 6 fin manifold. I know the track was pretty open and a lot on power so what were you looking for with the long manifold, better bottom, med, top, overall power, or better run time.... thanks again

Roelof 06-29-2018 04:44 AM

Yes, Novarossi does set a tight head clearance not giving enough room to set the tuning on the lean side if you want to. For sure when running long straights it can be harmfull for the glowplug.
