Default STS .12 ENGINE( RED HEAT SINK)

HI GUYS...just sharing

yesterday a guy with this engine sts ( red heat sink) had this problem where the engine would stall each time put full throttle almost in the middle of the long straight( exact same place every time). it was still new just pass brekin in i was told.

he uses skyline pipe, 25% nitro, with stock shimiing i think 0.5. / i didn't check what plug

anyway i tried to help tune it....but for almost 2 hours it still the same...the best we could do was going 3-5 laps than it stall.

we also try reducing and adding 0.1 shims but still to no avail.

** the engine was always easy to starts and idle's well ...temp were somewhere around 100celcius.

somehow i feel pretty bad couldn't help him get the motor running ...
i hope it is tuning issues or a matter of bad plug...i did not try to lean it to much coz i might mess up his new motor.

but i notice that this motor reaches high rpm very fast.....

p/s : anybody knows what base needle setting for it..thanks

check for air leaks if there is any one the has a nova carb try it, it could have a bad o ring. try 4-4 1/2 bottom 3 1/2- 4 top thats what mine liked but mine was a modded team engine

First double check the settings like 20 Smoke listed in the previous post.

Second you said that the engine revs very quickly, my D3R does not like overgearing, it needs big gears and a good flowing pipe. He could be overgearing the engine and be running too rich on the LSN. How is the acceleration from a dead stop after a 5-10 second wait?

Default STS d12ex

hi guys, i have some problems with my sts d12ex engine and need some advice!

when i throttle for the first 1/2, the engine is running smooth, but once i goes to full throttle, the engine speed remains and the exhaust song become very rough (sound like there are bubble in the exhaust) im using JPL pipes, 25% fuel and OS P6 plug. I would say most of the time i can see quite a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust. I did try to lean the high end but seem like no changes to the speed but temp increase.

Any ideas what going on? hehe! Thanks a lot!

Default Tuning

Unfortunately I don't know the base settings. In fact I don't usually carry them with me to the track or parking lot. But this is what I do to get in the ball park.
Empty all excess fuel out of the engine, remove glow plug, motor engine, remove air cleaner turn car upside down etc.

Remove the air cleaner, open the carb 60% open. Adjust the LSN until it is at the tip of the spray bar. This setting will usually get you an initial adjustment on the LSN.
Start with the HSN flush and start the car up. If it doesn't start lean it 1/2 turn and attempt to start it again. Do this until the engine starts.
Adjust idle and begin HSN adjustments while running the car on the track.
Next begin LSN tuning, but keep it in small increments. If this is a new engine you should not have to continually adjust the LSN, and if you stay with the same fuel, only small amounts after break in completion.

1. The head button is set up for Nova Rossi type glow plugs, Some racers have bee successful using the OS plugs others have found them to leak. I have always used RB or Nova Rossi plugs. Ensure that your glow plug is sealing correctly.
2. Sounds like your mixture is overly rich. I bet your LSN is too rich. Reset the LSN and HSN to factory settings.

The suggested setting to start with is:
.12
High Speed needle -- 4 turns out from the end
Low Speed needle -- 4 turns out from the end
Mid Range needle -- Flush with the housing
Idle -- 0.5mm open
