GRP .12 Stock and Tuned review

Hello from France,

New brand, new engine, new review, thanks to all factories that trust me..

And now my first review in english (sorry for my english but you ask me to make my reviews in english, so I try....)

Three years ago, GRP, the leader in RC tyres industry, decide to come in the engine business.

After numerous success with their different commercial brands, GRP comes on the engine scene with their own name

The line is composed with the Sport version (stock low price engine), and the Tuned version (MRT = Mario Rossi Tuned).

You can get the engine alone or in a Promokit (engine + FLS exhaust + commercial accessories). Pricing is quite good.

The more visible difference between Sport line and Tuned Line version is the heatsink color.
Polished alu for Sport line and Orange anodized for Tuned line.

The Sport line receive a black case.
4 dust caps are provided.
The case is light and the reinforcments give very good stifness.
Too bad, no milling above the rear bearing.
The exhaust port is well worked.
There is an O-ring in the case.
The front bearing is rubber sealed an GRP branded!!!

what estimated prices for this 2 engine..?
and when it become available..?

romuald31 02-14-2008 04:17 AM

For pricing, you have to ask your national distributor.
In Europe, all engines are available.

The sleeve is a 3 ports with a large exhaust port.

The piston have two oil rings, and the skirt is lightened.
A big regret because the conrod is squared....I thought come twenty years back...

The carter cap is machined in aluminium.

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4...tdekif3ww0.jpg

The heatsink is also machined in aluminium, and deception, the glowplug is standart and there's no insert...It's a monobloc haetsink..

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/7...tdekif3kn4.jpg

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8...tdekif3sm8.jpg

The carb is in aluminium and there's an insulator to prevent vapor lock.

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/4...tdekif3em6.jpg

romuald31 02-14-2008 12:09 PM

The crankshaft is very simple with a little turbo scope.

romuald31 02-14-2008 12:22 PM

And now, let's have a look inside the Tuned.

The crankcase seem to be the same, but some little differences in machining make the case slight different.

Jeeez, that's one crappy made cheap engine. Shouldn't cost more than 100 bucks....:weird:

(talking about the first one)

MugenDrew 02-14-2008 04:23 PM

P.O.S. Nice crank, killer head button/heat sink one piece must save weight. Apparently all previous aerodynamic theory's regarding leading and trailing edges have been disproved by the "brick shaped" con rod.

RC=Realy_Costly 02-14-2008 11:53 PM

woow... besides the cool orange heatsink they look shithouse.. first of all its just a ninja with a spray job and if the ninjas stuffed up... then this cheap chunk of alloy has no future.. and STANDARD PLUG:weird::weird: lost me right there

ill take my ninja anyday
the specs and price may be good but its just not of the same quality of a nova

romuald31, i just want to say thanks for taking your time and patience in showing us all of these engine's internals and giving your own feedback on your comparison between engines. These reviews that you have done have brought us great insight in what we are spending our $$$s... Please keep em coming!

romuald31 02-15-2008 11:08 AM

Thank you.

It's a pleasure for me to make these reviews (around 30 engines and around 10 cars).
And i'm very pleased if it's nice for you.

It's the first time I make it in english, so, I hope you understand what I want to say!!!

I will update soon.

My next challenge will be very big:
panorama of most af .21 off road engines ( I already receive 9 engines )

romuald31 02-15-2008 12:50 PM

The Tuned sleeve is little different.
The ports are more agressiveespecially in the angle...

The piston is the same as the sport version, but the conrod has knife edge design and is very lightened.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/648...tdekif3dt5.jpg

romuald31 02-15-2008 12:56 PM

The cater cap is threated to decrease the friction of the conrod.

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2...tdekif3fl1.jpg

The heatsink is milling.
The plug is now Turbo, and mounted on a separate insert.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4...tdekif3qo1.jpg

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/4...tdekif3fk3.jpg

The carb is also black treated.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/6...tdekif3tz5.jpg

romuald31 02-15-2008 02:53 PM

And now, the crankshaft.
The diagram would be agressive.
Nice turbo scope...

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/5...tdekif3qf3.jpg

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/908...tdekif3nd4.jpg

These is the exhaust.
The FLS system is great.
1/4 turn and it's OK...

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/2...tdekif3qf8.jpg

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8...tdekif3yx7.jpg

Rc_Boy89 02-15-2008 03:48 PM

holy cow that sport version looks crap! I guess the price will be added up with the fls pipe and little extras you get  to bad for the let down on the motor
The fls pipes are strong! such as from my previous ninja fls, I got a nice t-bone which broke my ninjas crankcase! Lets hope grp will make some other pipes for their engines.
All in all still looks very ninja like but will be interested to hear some track tests to compare.

Great reviews romuald31 :D

What is crap ?
20 years ago engines looked like this sports engine and even today there are a lot of people with current highend engines not getting to the laptimes as the topdrivers from then.

We are a bit spoiled with the idea that only nice shaped parts and fancy porting will make a motor fast.

So yes, for our standards it looks crappy but I still think it will be a a faster option for all those RTR drivers and that is the purpose of these kind of engines.

Unfortunately, 20 years ago, the price of this sport motor was the price of a top end engine. People expect the engines now to come standard with what was once new technology/fancy engine work. Maybe not as much, but the sport does look very basic to say the least. In 1/8 buggy, a Sportwerks .21 or.26 has more features/internal work done for a very low price. Its what is now considered to be standard, not extra.
