I'm running the 51124 (1st version). I removed the thinnest shim out of the 3 shims on the engine. I'm using 20% nitro.
The engine got up to 300f on sunday with about 10 minutes left in the race.
I did place second though

Charles, just replace the rod and it should be fine, it got pitted when you overheated, but not that bad, I have seen worst, your piston still have the nice brown coating, if it got overheated bad then the whole top of the piston would have looked like it got sandblasted.

Well I'm in need of a new mill after my JLR 2 finally quit on me. Is there a noticeable power difference between it and the 3?

I've done the break-in without issues.. comfortable running temperature.. good smoke trail, nice sound while accelerating, etc. After the break-in I was happy with the performance although I knew the motor could be pushed further. So far I was using 20% nitro.

After I changed to 16% I've started seeing some issues. To get the same performance and get the car to shift at same spot on the track, I had to lean a bit the hsn. Now the temperature runs higher...260F with less performance then I've had with 20%. any leaner and the engines gets too hot. Also when gradually accelerating the car off the ground, it starts fine but at a point in time, the revs start dropping rather than increasing, but there's still alot of smoke coming out...

I've read somewhere that this engine is shimed already for 30% nitro. Should I remove a shim and see if it helps?
I may blame the pipe as well. I'm running a copy of an efra 2017 pipe.

I ordered a picco 2607 now but it's still a month away to get it. Would the tuned pipe make the difference I'm looking for?

thanks.. sorry for the long post.

g

just to update this post...

i finally got the 2607 to play with.

When I swapped the 2017 with the 2607, I had to richen both lsn and hsn. I immediately had more power (both low and high end) and cooler temps but was not totally satisfied... I'm greedy

At that point I was still running .5mm.

I decided to try 0.4mm and it seems the sweet spot. I'm not tempted to try 0.3mm for because I'm happy with the power and temperature of the engine as it is now.

I've kept up with an OS TZ 5 port running 20% on the straight, and maybe I was hair lacking in the top end, but not enough to give the OS a real advantage. Low end was a completely different story however.

It pulled much harder than the OS.

Thanks everybody for your help.

now to repeat a questions... anybody nows the difference I would see with a skyline pipe? higher top end, stronger bottom end? Thanks.

You have the best pipe for that engine now, don't waste money on the skyline.

If you need more top speed, add a tooth on you second gear pinion, the engine will pull it easily.

What's the difference between the IDM 2617 and the 2607?

Marcos, the 2607 is Picco's only pipe and it's a real allrounder. If it has one shortcoming, it can be the lack of the really high rpm's on very large tracks.

This is why Daniele developed the 2617. It has a tad less punch but lets the engine rev higher. The fuel consumption is a bit higher than with the 2607.

I only run the 2617 on two track that have huge straights. Most of the time I run the 2607 and gear it up a bit.

i know the 2607 is the best match for the jl3 but sooner or later i'm going to have to replace it due to damage. I'm not a pro driver, i just do club racing and make alot of mistakes too! i'm asking about the skyline because it's cheaper and may suit my needs.

that is why i need to know the difference 2607 vs skyline... thank you.

The skyline pipe is a good all around pipe, but will not produce the power that the Picco 2607 does, but it will give you a decent powerband if used with the JL EVO 3, most people that paired the JL with the Skyline pipe are happy with the result.
