Guys still having alot of issues with this engine, yesterday I ran well attempted to run when the engine would not idle, all attempts from other guys with JL3 failed. It would start but not idle even when the idle screw was fully turned the idle did not rise and the engine died. Some of the guys suggested it was the plug, fuel line, seal around carb which were all replaced on the track as suggestion came up but all failed.

Finally cleaned the hSN to ensure fuel was getting in and not blocked, still it did not work.

After hours of frustration I gave up and left for the day, we also noticed when every time we started the engine and blip the throttle we heard a type of metal pinging sound.

Took down the engine and noticed the Conrod seemed a little burnt/golden and full of oil.

Suggestions????

Check for any play in the crank, and is it going through plugs? If so it probley is the rear bearing.

Never changed the bearings but I have not been using the engine long, I have only gotten 1/2 Gallon through the engine, but after breakin the engine has been giving issues.

I did however purchase both bearings but I need to schedule the change, I am getting fed up making purchases for this engine, it is stressing me now

When I broke in the engine I was using a Skyline pipe after the running it around tuning on the track i was told it was not performing well because of the pipe, then purchased the pipe, it was still not performing, then I was told it was leaking so we took it down purchased O-ring set changed all still slow and erratic but workable now it is just not idling.

Now today another driver called me telling me to get the 2651, now it is just getting ridiculous

i don't know if you read this thread before you buy the skyline pipe.
you must know that picco 12 engine work very well with picco pipes.like 2607-2617 and the new 2651.
now for the rebuild.a happy engine is that with noplay in the bearings, and the rod.you must check the crank pin for wear also.
if you have a good bottom that you can go upper.like compression and look about scratch in the sleeve.
then if you are good there too.then you must check for leaks.something that the picco carbs are known for.

my opinion is that you have a mechanical problem.this metal sound isn't good.i hope that you have not ruin it.

if i am not mistake this colored rod is a sign of a very lean engine.take out the crank and put the rod in the pin.if you can feel a lot of play it's time to replace it.
but before go out and buy new rod you must measure the crank pin.
if you have a digital caliper measure the pin.it must not be smaller than 0.05mm from the nominative diameter.ex the not lower than 4.94mm-4.95mm if the pin has 5mm diameter.
if this happen it's better to change engine, not parts.

Just wondering if there is a new jlr in the pipe line??
Any news Sam?
I still have 1 new one to run in but would like to get a backup engine for the pit box if my older one which i blew isnt repairable!
I would have thought that there would be one coming out soon!
I have had the evo 3 for 12-18 months at least!

chances are your front bearing is creating a vacuum leak......it loses vacum thru thte front bearing and will not have enough vacum signal thru the carb to idle.... very common with Picco engines these days...replace with a better bearing and watch the issue disapear
