If you don't have a temp gun, run it on the track pretty rich for 3 or 4 tanks, as though you are breaking it in, then begin to lean. Keep the bottom rich, and I think they run best at 220 - 240 degrees.

+1 You can race tune the engine after running it rich for 4 tanks, that is how easy it is to break in the JL.

i would start with 0.5mm, subsequently reduce to 0.4mm...

what should be done to a new engine prior to break in. take it apart and inspect for what?

Don't have to, but if you wanted to, then inspect for any metal shavings.

i found out that with the jl3:

when adding shims for higher % nitro, apart from re-tuning... one must reduce the idle air gap.

and one must increase the air gap when removing shims for lower % nitro...

hope this may help somebody...and hope someone can give a technical reason as to why this is the case...

the motor is all about flow of fuel and air. adjusting this balance with lead to having to tune the motor difference. the idle setting is a part of tuning also.
