There is a difference between headclearance and thickness of shims.

Some engines will still have some head clearance even without any shims installed.
Some engines will have the piston touching the head, if no shims are installed.
I have seen differences in the thickness of the headbutton, with Picco based engines, even if it was the same engine model.
So, the best way is to measure the head clearance, don't think that the amount of shims installed is the same as the head clearance....

ok, left one of the thicker ones on and one of the thinner ones, started it up and immediately there was a big jump in power, so i guess the shims i retained were .30mm, checked the top of the pistion and head button and there isnt any detonating "scars" on it, so i will leave the engine as it is for now, someone also said that once you start to have compression blown plugs, its time for an extra shim, so thats what i will do.

a big thank you to rob, sam and pro-e, lets hope this engine improves my lap times.

p.s. im almost sure it will!!!!!!!!

not 100% sure but there are a total of three shims, two thicker ones and one thin one.

so the head clearance for 16% will be .30, so i take of one .20 shim right?
No, take the .10mm shim out so that the head clearance is .40mm- Not .30mm as Sam has confirmed
Sorry Sam, had to check on posts, as i was giving local drivers your original post and all shimed for .40mm @ 16% and are running fine,
Sam-Sorry the apprentice had to correct the master, now all i need to is snatch the pebbles from your hand,

They are both awesome engines, I still have the IDM EVO 2 in stock which are modified by Daniele Ielasi himself, EVO 3's are available in both stock and "TUNED" versions.

Sam, I will be calling you next week to order a new engine. I'm leaning towards a "tuned" version.
Also, Karen will bake COOKIES for the 1/8 Nat's. I'm not racing. But will be there to help out.
