The time of 4 minute engines has arived
 

4 minute qualify has become almost a standard over here en with the 1st ENS we see this happen at the end of the 1st qualify.....

So in finals, does the lap time gain compensate for the lost 1 minute runtime?

  1. I think it might hurt racers' in the long finals: too many fuels stops means more things can go wrong in the pits....

Unclear if in the races other engines are used but it is clear we now have seen 4 min qualify engines

I think 4min qualies saves engines...no need to tune it to the edge

With the urge to go faster, now driving on the 4 min limit it is possible we will see tha tuning to the edge again.

It's sad to see that the Engine Mfg's are pushing the 4 Minute mark now as the 4 Minute qualifier was put in place so not to burn down the engines running them on the death line. If they are going to do this put it back to 5 Minutes !!!!

Euro Nitro Series Greiner takes exciting maiden 1/8th victory


Lamberto Collari looked set early on to throw a curveball to his competitors by going 5 minutes between fuel stops, only to come short on the in lap of his 2nd stop. Having been stuck behind Carmine Raiola early in the 30 minute main, once passed Greiner had to set about catching the leading pair of Kurzbuch and Balestri, and was helped by doing 4 minutes between stops, his OS engine not as thirsty as the Novarossi based power units of those ahead.

Racing on his home track, early on Lamberto Collari looked set for an upset as he was able to stretch his pit stop window to 5 minutes, which would have given him almost a 3 pitstop advantage over his rivals.

If they increase the minimum time limit, people will just hate ROAR even more than they do now. Racers hate being told they aren't allowed to go as fast as they possibly can.

Furthermore, engineers will always try to achieve maximum possible performance -- or if performance is artificially limited, engineers will always try to achieve maximum permissible performance. The only way for that to not happen is to remove engineers from the process entirely, and force racers to buy engines built by amateurs who don't know how to achieve maximum performance.

Within the ROAR you can use 4 minute engines as wel, you only have to make a fuel stop. So if the laptimes are faster with 0.3 sec using a 4 minute engine compared with a 5 minute one you may gain an advantage.

I'm not arguing about the possible advantage of using a 4-minute engine instead of a 5-minute engine. I'm only saying there is no point complaining about engineers pushing the limits of the rules. There is no rule saying that the engineers should be "polite" and not try to push the limits. Indeed, there can't be a rule like that. Pushing the limits is what engineers get paid to do. You can set the limits anywhere you want, and engineers will design products to push those limits, because racers wouldn't buy products designed by "polite" engineers -- racers want to win.

The fuel tank capacity could be increased, they have been the same for many many years despite the advancements made with cars going faster, handling better, bodies producing more downforce, and engines making more power.

Whilst I agree the engines are the main culprut with runtime, other things as mentioned above have contributed.

I think engineers now have to think of how to build fast engines, but with as low a fuel consumption as possible.
Because power and torque these motors already have a lot.

True, looking at electric racing we have gone up from 1200mAh to now 10.000mAh. That is 8x the fuel capacity while we still use a 125cc tank.

If tank size increases the performance will rise and in a year we will be back at the same point.
We will use more fuel and run dry at 4 mins just the same. The cost will go up due higher wear as well.

Only if fuel stops are made to cost more time than is gained by the extra power will we see a push for a balance.
