Choosing nitro engine for Hobao Hyper SS
 

Gi,

I am fairly new to RC nitro and would to have your input on selecting the best nitro engine.

I am planning to buy Hobao Hyper SS Nitro RTR. However it comes with 3 different kinds of engine and will appreciate your feedback on the differences with pros and cons on the engine. Eventually, recommending the best engine and also if you can list the engines in order of being latest.

1) Force JL .28 4 Port nitro engine
2) MachStar .28 6 Port nitro engine
3) Hyper .21 Race nitro engine.

I see the option 1 is usually found in OFNA branded in U.S., while option 2 and 3 in U.K.

Much appreciated. Also if you can advise on where I could get the best price online as I am based in United Arab Emirates.

alpha engines are pretty great value .. they should have what you need... or a X act 21

@DRaceMasta: Thank you for the note. But I only have the options to choose from the three i have listed so which one would be the best out of the three and why is what i am trying to learn and understand before buying one.

If you can find the version with the .21 engine that would be your best bet. Buggies don't need .28 engines. You'll just have shorter run times on a tank of fuel.

Now that's another way of looking it in terms of time to run on a full tank.
However, I really would like to know what makes it so appealing to have Hyper7 as well as Hyper SS with .28 engine.

Would more torque mean better buggy performance on hilly drives or grass etc. and what does more engine rev mean?

A .28 engine will usually have more torque. So acceleration may be a little faster, but that depends on the engine. There are many .21 engines that are more powerful than .28 engines, so it really depends on the engines you're comparing.

Usually a .28 engine won't run as fast as a .21 engine will. Say a certain .28 maxes out at 30,000 rpm and a good .21 maxes out at 40,000. You can use a clutch bell with more teeth with a .28 engine since they usually have more torque to get extra speed, but I don't think the bigger engines are any better in a buggy. People usually put them in monster trucks so that they can do wheelies easily.

Simply: .28 usually has more torque, so quicker acceleration while a .21 has a higher rpm range and (usually) a higher top speed. I don't think the extra torque is worth the extra fuel that a .28 will use. Most people use .21 engines in their buggies.

I have no experience with the Force.28....but I have used many Macstar.28 and Hyper.21...they are essentially the same engine but with a different bore....same carb/crank/rod/bearings/head/gudgeon pin/etc.

The Hyper.21 has a few more rpm at the top and the Macstar.28 has a little more torque down low...as expected.
They are both pretty good RTR engines and if I could only choose one then I would have a hard time deciding which to go for...they are very similar in performance terms.

As already said you can gear the larger engine differently to account for the torque/rpm differences between small and large engines...but in my experience there is not a great deal of difference with these two particular engines.

I had a Hyper 7 PCR buggy years ago, it had the Hyper 8 port race engine, that thing got given a pretty hard time & went real well, was good on fuel & held a tune pretty well too. For an rtr engine it is pretty good & doesn't cost an arm & leg either.

The eight port has more rpm than the three port...and the eight port race engine uses a 14mm crank as opposed to the normal 13mm crank.
