VP is also a major supplier of nitro to drag racing. The full-size kind. Think that's not an issue for the r/c'er? Maybe. Maybe not. But those teams buy by the barrel; not by the gallon. With the bulk of nitro coming out of China these days, it only takes a blip in Pacific Ocean weather or international economics or a dock-worker strike to effect supply. It's convenient business-wise for a stateside single source supplier of nitro. Then again, it may work as a detriment.

100% sure its the oils used in the fuel...not the nitro.

It is not the same. VP cannot copy Nitrotane even though they make it. Nitrotane does not have any Castor oil in it.

Nitrotane does have castor oil in it. The fuels are different for sure. http://www.horizonhobby.com/fuel-and...quart-losf0120

I thouth that if 20% has it, maybe the 30% does to.But reading more about the subject it looks like they only use it on 20%.''The lubrication package and the formula for Nitrotane fuel is proprietary with each type and nitro content different''.

Interesting thread, thanks for a good read.

I have been playing with Nitro engines in control line/rc aircraft, boats, cars for over 40 years now mixing my own fuel for at least 30 of those years.
We(my Son and I) use Nitro X HP173 30% Pro Race Blend and our OS engines run very well with excellent runtime. We put many gallons of fuel through our engines and they last for a very long time. It is clearly the best fuel we have ever used.

I have used other fuels such as Odonnell(2006 Worlds, great fuel), VP Pro(C-Netic), Sidewinder(FEMCA and for a few months one year), Byrons for a season and they all performed very well.

I repair a lot of 21 engines and our local club has a lot of drivers using VP Pro and it definitely is harder on the engines and they carbon up faster. Bearing issue are commonplace with VP Pro. The tell tale blue dye gives it away every time. Obviously people using other fuels have issues at some point but it is usually due to improper care(and I'm sure VP users don't always do the right thing either) running too lean or impact damage such as hammering a flywheel off the cranks instead of using pullers, and the list goes on.....

I found Sidewinder gummed up the engine with a waxy substance.

Out of the limited options I have locally, I'll go with Nitrotane this year, maybe... Bones Brew does seem to be an option.

Any backyard bashers here? What are you guys using?

I've been using Sidewinder Race 30/12. Haven't had many issues...although some local peeps found it corrosive.

10% oil or 8%?

I'm guessing 10% (not a Clocked Works owner)

$30 a gallon shipped is comparable to local prices for other brands.

I use 8% with zero problems. Engine runs crisp and there's always a film of oil left in engine. But if you're skeptical try 10%. Or just message Brent and tell him what results you're after. Great product, really good guy.

If you think about it, it's like saying novarossi produces a better engines for RB, Top and fusion than their own line of engines.
