Help: Engine options for Losi 8IGHT?
 

I am looking to buy an engine for a Losi 8ight. I know this trend has been out there for a long time now but I am really overwhelmed by all the information and different opinions everyone has.

What I'm looking for:
1. Racing motor
2. Bang for the buck
3. Reliable
4. Any displacement (no rules for 1/8 scale at my local track :)

I have years of experience racing 2stroke motorcross bikes so i am already aware of the tuning and maintenance requirements. I'm not looking for the fastest motor, just something that I can take out and have fun with and something that will be easy to start!

Budget? The alpha a852 or the a352 .23. Great bang for the buck. Pipe of choice would be 2090 alpha.

Do you know what the difference is between the standard Novarossi P5 and a Clocked Novarossi P5? There is just a huge price difference between the two. Clockworks doesn't really explain a lot of what they do and I'm going to experiment with the stock engine to see if I can do anything to increase performance.

Clockworks mods the engine. There is a big price difference but there is also a HUGE performance difference. I recommend the Clocked P5 buggy mod with CNC piston

Thats the engine I used to run in my 8ight 2.0 buggy. I replaced the stock piston with the CNC piston, this was before they offered the P5 with the CNC piston out the box. It screams, wicked engine for buggy but also very drivable even for a bad driver like me ;)

Also the support from Neal at Clockwork is second to none. Call him up if you're having a tuning issue and within 10 minutes it will be fixed.

Look at Fusion engines, they have the best Novarossi parts if you opt for the Lightning engines, if you want the stock still great engines, they also can come fully modified by a Novarossi guy (Monty) They get great fuel mileage and great power, they are winning in Australia, and also in Abu Dubai as well as the US. They also seem to have some of the best support which for me is the best reason to choose them. If you don't want to go Fusion, try Werks engines they also have great customer support. Each engine is about the same, they have different characteristics but come on if there was truly one that was "THE BEST" don't you think everyone would drive that engine??? For me the best is more to do with customer support as well as price and product, and when you can get top of the line Novarossi parts along with 11 minute run times for under $300 who would choose anything else, and even IF you wanted a modified engine I think the most expensive is the Fusion X7FM and it is only $420 still cheaper than a stock Bonitto with some of the same parts. Throw in the great customer support and I am sold.

I have ran Nvision, Orion, Novarossi, Werks and OS Speed (My Fusion is in the mail) Orion great power but not cheap, and NO customer support, I sent over 26 emails when I was having problems and NO one replied. Nvision good cheap engine but not a power house but good none the less. Werks (B2) great cheap engine GREAT customer support, Novarossi great engine parts are easily available if needed good customer support from their network of dealers, OS Speed, good engine long lasting plenty of power but again not cheap and no issues yet for customer support. Fusion engines I have only heard of one complaint and the guy had one broke in and NEVER touched the needles then wanted to know why it didn't run right, but excellent customer support and TONS of complements on how good the engines are For a losi buggy I would go with the Fusion X3LX, Orion 5 port, OS Speed II, Werks B6, Novarossi plus 4 or p5, if you want insane power go with a Fusion X7FM, Novarossi Bonitto FM or a Fusion X5LFM

Alpha engines are also good powerful engines and cheap, the Dragon or the Lutz are monsters but not the smoothest of engines unless you take time with the clutch pipe and tons of other things but still great engines, there are many around Viet Nam that do well

In the end it is up to you, if you want power get a modified engine or a 7 port engine like a Bonitto or the Fusion X7 or any other 7 port that is out there

Buy a Werks B2 or a Novarossi 3 port. You have never driven a .21 powered buggy before. You won't have any use for a modded motor or for that matter for a good top of the line motor. Budget motors are the best way to learn about engine tuning and to learn about driving. There is a steep learning curve with tuning motors and with driving. If you screw it up you are going to kill your engine. You are going to screw up. That is just part of the hobby. Screw up with a cheap motor so you can afford to just buy a new one instead of trying to keep a motor running because you spent a lot of money on it.

Also, don't spend over $150 ON A MOTOR SIR. Like Matt said you will Screw it up learning how to tune a motor. I learned the hard way in 1998 I burned up two $300 motor learning. LOL

not sure what jeromerc means by Alphas not being smooth i own 4 alphas and they are easy on the wallet and easy to tune and hold their tune and i run them with many different pipes and clutch setups and i never once said to myself dang these engines need to be smoother cause they dont. they are great $200 engines that can and do run with the high end engines all the time. ryan lutz just won the psycho nitro blast with a STOCK alpha engine
