Default Air intake question

I have a nirto run truggy and got it from a friend went to run it the other day and it ran at half idle but when i gassed it it just shut off. so i took of the intake to get to the screw to adjust it and forgot to put it back on. and the thing ran great. i realized i didnt have it on and didnt want dirt and gravel to get into so i quickly put the air filter intake thing back on. and what do you know it did the same thing quit as soon as i gave it throttle. so i want to know should i just get anew air sponge or just trim that one up to make it work.

I would clean the one you have first with warm soapy water and lightly re-oil. I would also get a spare. myself personally like to run the largest filter assembly i can fit under the body work.

If your motor immediately quit after you applied throttle (which opens up the carb) try richening the fuel mixture on your low speed a bit. Always good to know the motor idles since that means you're in the ballpark!

With your engine idling, pinch the fuel line with some pliers. If thr rpms go up, your low speed needle is too rich, if the rpms go down or the engine shuts off it's too lean

not a good idea to pinch fuel line with pliers. use your fingers.

Unless your filter is REALLY dirty, it's your fuel setting. When you put your filter on, you're restricting air flow. Less air needs less fuel. Sounds to me like your needle is set too rich, that's why I suggest the pinch test to verify it. And you can use pliers, just don't put a death grip on it.
