Default Can you explain shimming and what it does?

I am running the Losi stock 454 in my 8t 2.0 and was reading a lot on the losi site about shimming the motor... What is this, how do you do it and what does it do for you.

Do I need to do this if I run 30%?

When you shim the head you could be adding a copper gasket to the head button or taking one away. Adding a shim will decrease your compression, taking one away will increase it. Typically in a non turbo stock mill you want to run a extra .10mm shim when running 30%. If you don't, your window for the proper tune is very short and you could create pre-detonation which can cause unnecessary stress on your wrist pin, rod and crank and it will cause pitting on the top of the piston.

So where do you get shims or can you just use a washer from hardware store?

Better to get it from Losi, seen you're run losi engine, the shim are made of copper or aluminium.
copper normally is 0.1mm -0.2mm
Alum normally is 0.3mm

Hope this help.
Cheers
